The difficulty with this is defining a "classic" album. Is an Indie classic album really a classic album? If it is:

Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technicina
Big Black - Songs About F***ing

sonicl 02.28.2007 08:51 AM

I always think of a "classic" album being one that is universally heralded as a great. So, for instance, some of Roxy Music's later albums may be considered classics by the sort of writers who decide what is classic and what isn't, while we would largely consider them utter middle-of-the-road drivel. Can something that is incredibly difficult for the man in the street to listen to be considered a classic, or is it just good?

Tokolosh 02.28.2007 08:52 AM

The Stooges - Fun House
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
REM - Green
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Charles Mingus - Oh yeah
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Neil Young - Harvest
Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove

etc, etc.

sonicl 02.28.2007 09:07 AM

I feel I should have listed something by Abba, but I'm not sure if there's any one album of theirs that defines them.

You see, that's the problem with "classic" album lists, they're always going to contain something by a band that might be considered crass but who have released an album that defines an era or a genre.

porkmarras 02.28.2007 09:10 AM

It could be because they were more of a singles band. Why not start a thread for singles?Go on sonicl,i know that you want to.

sonicl 02.28.2007 09:14 AM

No, it's okay. You can have the honour. Classic "Best Of" albums maybe, in honour of bands or artists who have produced a consistently great body of work. But I'll wait a while before I start that one, I'll let this one run its course first.

porkmarras 02.28.2007 09:19 AM

Do it!

musicfallinglikesnow 02.28.2007 09:52 AM

Well I prefer the term "classic" instead of "cult record"...Maybe I exceeded with labeling MMM a classic.

sonicl 02.28.2007 09:54 AM

Oh no, Metal Machine Music is a classic, it's just that it's a classic because of what it represents, rather than because of the music. I'm reading this thread as being about classic records musically.

I happen to think that "classic" is a rather over-used term when referring to records. "Classic" is generally a status that is awarded by the media, where it tends to mean "ticks all the right boxes".
