Mark Ibold

Mark Ibold toured with SY since one year and a half. IMO He really fits with the band. Do you think he should become a full member of the band ? Should he replace Kim at bass ? Do you think it's possible ?
Discuss.

No.

HECKLER SPRAY 10.24.2007 08:01 AM

Apparently, SY prefer to play live with a 5th member, and Ibold looks to be the good person to second the band (especially Kim).
I don't mean that Kim should leave the band, she can also sing and play guitar.

PAULYBEE2656 10.24.2007 08:02 AM

mark probably is a full time sy person now and deserves it. he is amate of theirs and fits in well and looks at home with sy on stage, something i felt jim never did. as for replacing kim on bass, that will probably happen as kims arthritic wrists wont get any better, these things never do. the reason for a fifth youth was to eliviate some of kims bass playing as they are heavy mothers to hold 360 odd days of the yea. it also allows kim more freedom which she plainly enjoys. maybe mark wont replace the songwriting aspect of kims bass but certainly will live. im all for that to be honest, any help is good help if it promoted the longgevity of th sonic life.

screamingskull 10.24.2007 08:03 AM

replacing her on bass for the tours is fine, but on the CD's??? hmmmmmm

HECKLER SPRAY 10.24.2007 08:10 AM

Yeah, you're right, I don't know....
But it could allow Kim to increase her participation in the guitar parts, for example.

screamingskull 10.24.2007 08:12 AM

i think she should carry on playing bass/guitar on the albums for as long as she can. i like that its just the 4 of them on the albums.

PAULYBEE2656 10.24.2007 08:16 AM

oh yeah. i dont think mark is doing studio work at all. i dont think thats the deal. maybe some input but live certainly.

neptuneg 10.24.2007 09:25 AM

The double-bass thing is kind of cool. Also, Kim can still play bass, judging from all of the Daydream shows this summer which Mark did not play. Mark should stick around, though

neds atomic dustbin revival starts here!

Toxa 10.24.2007 10:07 AM

he fits perferctly - that's true. I'd like to see him as a 5th member.

Anyone know - did Mark play on that new Dylan cover?

spot on! :) :) :)

Hey Mark, any info about a Pavement reunion ? I read on the Jicks site that Spiral Stairs was at Malkmus wedding and he's said there 'd be probably a reunion in 2009 for Pavement's 20th anniversary. Do you confirm that rumor ?

andrei 10.24.2007 01:30 PM

I think the ideal 5th SY member was Jim O'Rourke (both studio and live). I don't have nothing against Mark... seems a really nice guy and a good bass player, but SY's live era with O'Rourke was much better, in my opinion. And, frankly, i can't dig too much the double-bass thing.
But yeah, you're right PAULYBEE2656, i had the same feeling about O'Rourke not being totally into the band. In a kind of way Mark fits better in the band than O'Rourke.

andrei 10.24.2007 01:33 PM

oops... i haven't seen Mark thread reply:D

I think it'd be great if Mark joined as an official member, not just touring. Maybe Kim could go back to guitar and Mark could do bass. It'd be cool for SY to be back to three guitars, like during the mid and late nineties. And as an added bonus, the guitar would probably be easier on Kim's wrists.

pbradley 10.25.2007 01:52 AM

I'm cool either way. If Kim wants to get down on the thudstick, let her. If she needs back up, call Ibold. If she decides it's too much of a hassle, they should bring him on and maybe let him in on a bit on the songwriting side. Why not.

Rob Instigator 10.25.2007 09:24 AM

all I know is that they rocked the shit in austin with Mark Ibold, and they rocked the shit out with Jim O'Rourke.

Sonic Youth is everything and as long as you got the group together and you add these bad-asses to help out then fuck yeah!

just never ever ever add a horn section.
