Superchunk

Surely there must be Superchunk fans around here? One of the most underrated indie rock bands of the 90s, that toured and released albums consistenly all throughout the decade (And even a little past) and somehow Mac not only found time to be in Superchunk (And later Portastatic, another good band) but to start and operate Merge Records.

Just a killer band in my opinion. Most people say all their songs sound similar but I don't really hear it.

My favorite records from them are On The Mouth, Foolish, Indoor Living, and No Pocky For Kitty.

Yeah, Superchuck are awesome! I was actually just listening to No Pocky For Kitty in my car the other day. It's a good album to drive to.

I really like "Here's to Shutting Up". Haven't really explored much of their other stuff, though.

By the way I experienced (I use that term cause I was at the back of the venue at the time) Potastatic and they were by far the loudest band I'd ever heard play. Of course, that's coming from someone with very limited concert-going experience, so take from that what you will.

SuperCreep 06.19.2009 06:51 PM

I'm only familiar with No Pocky for Kitty. It's pretty good, but the vocals annoy the hell out of me.

StevOK 06.19.2009 10:02 PM

I really like the album they did with Jim O'Rourke, Come Pick Me Up.

ZEROpumpkins 06.19.2009 10:54 PM

I enjoy their music in very small doses, but after a while I can't help but feel like it all blends together.

Death & the Maiden 06.19.2009 11:04 PM

They do a decent version of Lying in State by The Verlaines.

I think you should check it out, it's often times the band's most under-looked album (Their first record also gets over-shadowed by their other albums unfortunately).

Indoor Living has one of the best opening tracks on a record ever, I think.

Anybody hear their new record? I actually think it's one of their strongest, doesn't start to drift near the end like some of their records do.

Big Superchunk fan here. I went to a concert in 95/96 and it stands as one of the best I have seen to this day.

PAULYBEE2656 09.14.2010 09:30 AM

ok jeremy. i will check it out. havent heard the new one yet but the single rocks!

PAULYBEE2656 09.15.2010 08:31 AM

ok jeremy ive checked out indoor living and its excellent! nice call

the new album is damn good too. pure chunk.

Jeremy 09.15.2010 09:18 AM

Glad you enjoyed them both Paul! I think Indoor Living might be my favorite Superchunk record, but it's a close one.

Yeah the new record is pretty sweet. I can't believe I almost had doubts about the quality, even after the awesome single they released. They're playing on Jimmy Fallon next week too, that should kick ass.

Speaking of music that aged horribly.....

StevOK 06.16.2011 06:57 PM

Man, their latest record has really grown on me.

Count Mecha 06.17.2011 03:21 PM

They're not a band I'm too familiar with, but I know Come Pick Me Up sort of well. The feeling that I always got from them was that the music felt really dated, and I try not to mean that in a derogatory way. But when I hear them, I don't even have to think about what decade that came from. But yeah, I always thought they were fun sounding.
