She's amazing.

Severian 08.12.2015 06:37 PM

See, nobody knows what the fuck you're saying, GD. Seriously you spend all this time taking piss neg repping or just being an overall shit, and then every once in a while you say something NOT totally off-putting. Based on your track record, it makes more sense to believe that by saying "she's amazing" you're actually insulting someone than to believe that you're being sincere.

At best, you're kind of like a fucked up walking boy-who-cried-wolf metaphor (or middle-aged-guy-who-cried-I'm-an-asshole)
At worst, you're a fucked up middle aged asshole with really low standards and, like, no shame.

But fuck it, hell yeah new Joanna Newsom!

Severian 08.12.2015 06:40 PM

I was kind of worried we might have lost Ms. Newsom.

the video: while i was not crazy about the subject matter, the exposure control thoughout it is kind of a masterpiece-- i mean, there is a nice soft contrast in the night, there is a nice soft contrast against the burning sun, i mean, wtf? i want to know how pta shot that. I WANT TO KNOW. it's deceptively simple. [i don't meant just generalities about backlit subjects- i mean exactly here. because he also moves & moves]

the song: i love it! i don't know a word she's saying and i don't care, but the way she controls her voice i find extraordinary. sure she's not an opera singer but she's more fun and strange.

Speaking of PTA, I think Joanna Newsom was pretty much the only consistently good part of Inherent Vice. I had such high expectations... but she was on point.

New song is great!

hes like a quantum particle, always holding two positions at once when observed through the light of the internet

Severian 11.22.2015 11:41 AM

The album is totally fucking excellent. Absolutely, exquisitely, hypnotically beautiful.

Mortte Jousimo 11.23.2015 12:33 AM

To me sounds to much Kate Bush. Listen Kate instead.

Severian 11.23.2015 01:55 AM

What the hell is up with Larry King's shoes?

That's no illusion man. Look at the bottoms of those bad boys. They're WHITE! Yeah, like old ass Jordans. Dress shoes do not have bright white bottoms. Ever.

It's just funny. I'm guessing he just wants to be comfortable in the one place that isn't on display to the entire world, which is totally fair. But why then does it look like he's wearing sock garters?

I'm speechless over here.

Severian 11.23.2015 11:10 AM

why am I commenting on Larry King anyway? Look at that photo. It's not even a sexy pose, or a deliberately attractive angle, and still Joanna Newsom is like a goddamn heavenly vision.

She is absolutely one of the most unassumingly gorgeous women who has ever lived. She's an angel.

Kate's influence is present and Newsom has acknowledged it. Now, show me ONE Joanna song that sounds "too much" like Bush the way Tori Amos used to ape Kate. Hell, you can go back all the way to the self-released Walnut Whales and Yarn And Glue CD-Rs if you want to. You won't find it.

Mortte Jousimo 11.27.2015 08:11 AM

I just watched Sapokanikan-vid and there is nothing more that Bush can offer me (much lesser than Bush). If you´re thinkin Sapokanikan is the most mediocre song of Newsom and the others in that new one or earlier differ a lot to it, tell me, I will listen.

Severian 11.27.2015 01:09 PM

Sapokanikan is a great song in my opinion. Divers is a great album. It's not quite as perfect as Ys, but I really think it is a fantastic album.

As for Kate Bush and Tori Amos, I don't really have anything to say about either at the moment. Kate Bush is a cultural treasure, at least for the Brits. She's made some truly fascinating music, though very little of her material speaks to me personally in any kind of way. But she's certainly a brilliant artist. Tori's always struck me as a bit of an opportunist, and her fans can kill a buzz faster than a police raid. Also, she's so goddamn annoying.

Joanna Newsom has never struck me as the same kind of artist, though I suppose the Kate Bush influence is kind of impossible to deny. Her sound is sometimes considered challenging (almost notoriously so according to some) but I genuinely think she's accessible in the best possible way. You don't need to be into experimental music to appreciate "Emily" (though it probably helps if you've spent some time with artists who reject basic "rules" of song structure; maybe I wouldn't have been an immediate fan if I hadn't already loved Sonic Youth and Tortoise and Slint, but who knows?)

There's just a really beautiful quality to her music that I think anyone (post-punks, Dylan fans, Arcade Fire/Broken Social Scene types, fucking Mumford and sons lovers, or whoever else) can appreciate if they're not too rigid about those "rules"... that's not really the case with Kate Bush and it's certainly not true of Tori.

I think of Joanna Newsom as more of a Jim O'Rourke kind of character. Or possibly a Tom Waits. Not a godforsaken lover-me-or-loathe-me Tori/Sufjan type.

She and Cocorosie have a lot to answer for. And Devandra Banhart if he's still around.
