The best concert I ever went to was when I saw the Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza.

k-krack 05.22.2007 03:39 PM

1- Sonic Youth
2- Arcade Fire
3- Blood Brothers
4- The Pixies
5- Death From Above 1979
6- Metric
(Which isn't to mention countless fucking amazing local shows.)

Einsturzende Neubauten on their Perpetuum Mobile tour. That show beyond amazing! After that, probably SY or the Melvins.

The Velvet Underground playing at that psychiatric convention, if only to observe the looks on all the people having dinner there's faces.

The premiere of Igor Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps ".

"The Ballets Russes staged the first performance. The intensely rhythmic score and primitive scenario—a setting of scenes from pagan Russia—shocked audiences more accustomed to the demure conventions of classical ballet.

The complex music and violent dance steps depicting fertility rites first drew catcalls and whistles from the crowd, and there were loud arguments in the audience between supporters and opponents of the work. These were soon followed by shouts and fistfights in the aisles. The unrest in the audience eventually degenerated into a riot. The Paris police arrived by intermission, but they restored only limited order. Chaos reigned for the remainder of the performance, and Stravinsky himself was so upset on account of its reception that he fled the theater in mid-scene, reportedly crying.

Stravinsky ran backstage, where Diaghilev was turning the lights on and off in an attempt to try to calm the audience. Nijinsky stood on a chair, leaned out (far enough that Stravinsky had to grab his coat-tail), and shouted numbers to the dancers, who couldn't hear the orchestra (this was challenging because Russian numbers are polysyllabic above ten, such as eighteen: vosemnadsat).

Although Nijinsky and Stravinsky were despondent, Diaghilev (a Russian art critic as well as the ballet's impresario) commented that the scandal was "just what I wanted". The music and choreography were considered barbaric and sexual and are also often noted as being the primary factors for the cause of the riot, but many political and social tensions surrounding the premiere contributed to the backlash as well."

That would have been fun!

The (International) Noise Conspiracy definitely springs to mind, as do the Evens.

the best show i ever saw was a shellac show. such class.

Trasher02 05.23.2007 08:40 AM

Best show I saw was Radiohead. Fantastic setlist, I was in the trance of their music the entire time.

Georgekrz 05.23.2007 10:25 AM

best gigs i never saw were probably the first 3 years of no fun fest. i really regret not getting into noise sooner.

sonicl 05.23.2007 10:44 AM

Aww, shit, yes. The best gig I never saw was SY on Brighton Beach. I wanted to go, but had no-one to go with, which at that time was a very scary prospect and reason enough to stay at home. Little did I know that had I gone I may have met people who I would later come across on this board 20-odd years later.

I wish I was old enough/alive for a bunch of shows by bands I like.

Can't really do much about that.

You've conviced me it's the concert I 'd never want to see.

pbradley 05.23.2007 02:36 PM

Journey's just too white.

Wish I could have gone to an old school Dead Kennedys show.
