mix #3 completed - massage the history.

sounds good. thanks to john for being handcuffed to the board today

johnagnello:
Song #3 on the new Sonic Youth record is just about mixed. It's just shy of ten minutes long and it kicked my ass. Totally worth it.

thesonicyouth:

john thinks he's teaching us a thing or two about feedback. in the meantime mix#4 was completed - something about a Mailbu Gas Station

John_Agnello:

Sonic Youth mixing continues with song #4 pretty much done. And there was joy throughout the kingdom of noise.

John Agnello: "Oh, by the way, I started mixing the new Sonic Youth record last Friday and it is awesome. The first four songs are wonderful. This record has everything that makes them my favorite band in the world. The rock, they jam, they score!!!!!!

The mixing continues tomorrow in Hoboken, not far from the site of the recording. We have 12 songs and we master at the end of next week. We did this record, air raid style. We started overdubbing January 2nd and didn't stop until we started mixing. Included in that time was a whirlwind trip to Amherst to the famous Bisquiteen studio to do a few days of vocals with Mrs. Gordon.

Anyway, I'm still short on details, but this I can say. The record is coming out on Matador. It will be out before the summer. The record is wonderful. They are great to work with. This is the best way ever to start a New Year. I'm absolutely gushing".

mil_pl 01.20.2009 04:41 PM

thanks Moshe, that message made me even more hungry for that record.

Sonic Youth Twitter About Their Recording Process

"john thinks he's teaching us a thing or two about feedback"

While I was at last weekend's Jemina Pearl show in Brooklyn, some enthusiastic stoner randomly tapped me on the shoulder. "Dude," he said, "I think that's Kim Gordon over there-- she's so hot!" Indeed, it was Kim Gordon. And yes, she looks great. (Thurston Moore, who also looks pretty incredible, was also at the gig.) These two do not grow old, except when they're doing so gracefully, like on 2006's Rather Ripped.
It's impressive that Kim and Thurston had time to check the show out at all considering they're in the mixing stage of their Matador debut-- which is out this summer and may or may not be called The Eternal-- with veteran boardsman John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., the Hold Steady, Rather Ripped) right now. How do we know what Sonic Youth are doing right now, you ask? Because they have a Twitter account. Even the coolest band on earth needs to micro-overshare once in a while.

So far, the feed is quite straightforward ("today's song is called sacred trickster"), but there are mini moments of levity ("john thinks he's teaching us a thing or two about feedback"). Last week, Thurston told Billboard that the album will feature more than a few "heavy ass weirdo hooks" and that "it's rock-centric, but still experimental...I still don't know how to play the guitar." So those hoping for Sonic Youth's dubstep treatise on the legacy of Robert Mapplethorpe will have to wait.

Of course, Sonic Youth are diversifying their bonds elsewhere. There's that book of short stories based on their songs. That museum exhibition based on their "multidisciplinary output." The dance program collaboration with John Paul Jones. They're playing gigs in Austria, Germany and Brooklyn. We're tired.

John_Agnello:
Lee is on the left. Thurston is on the right. I love panning.

nancykitten 01.21.2009 01:54 PM

WOah! Sonic mindfuck. Aren't they usually mixed the other way around? Thurston on the left, Lee on the right?

Moshe 01.21.2009 02:28 PM

Agnello:

Steve finally likes his drum sound. Sheesh!!!!

The manager of the studio does not "Grocery Shop" for clients. Sheesh!

Steve and Lee in the studio.
