Thinking Fellers Union

Yo, Yo ,Yo!
Have been reading a wee bit about the Thinking Fellers Union, they sound like quite an influental band. Is anyone a fan? What is a good album to start on? In fact, are the any good?

Discus (if you want)

the only song i've heard by them, entitled "my pal the tortoise", is great

absolutely wonderful band!!!!

mother of all saints is probably the best, strangers from the universe might be "easiest".

They've done a whole bunch of very mediocre songs, though they go through bouts of catchy rock.

Don't listen to Cardinal Rob, they were one of the best underground song-oriented bands of the 90's. Their sound was innovative and challenging but also very listenable in a pop sense, a more colourful Beefheart maybe. I remember seeing them in 92 or so and thinking that "This is the band Sonic Youth want to be" (remember this was the poprock Goo & Dirty period, I wouldn't think that now). I saw them probably a dozen times in the 90's, in San Francisco mostly, but also in NYC, Burlington VT and in Montreal. some people may be put off by their quirkiness, the collagelike ability to thread different styles and sounds together. I still need to pick up some of thier early albums - the songs still hold up - but if I had to pick one I'd pick I Hope It Lands. Hmm, or maybe Strangers From the Universe. Truly these are the bargains of the used/remainder bins. MOther of All Saints is a mighty release too!

I hated most of their side projects though!

their song "Hurricane", from a 10" of the same name (i think) is one of the best epic sad songs you'll ever hear.
for overall albums though, Hope It Lands.

One of the things I enjoy about this board is that it gives me an opportunity to revisit old records in my collection. I have a couple of albums by TLU and would endorse the above comments about Mother of All Saints. The other one I have is 'Lovelyville' which came out in '91. It's a much more quirkier and experimental sound with less of the derivative Polvo type guitars that feature on Mother. But both albums hold up well.

I love lovelyville as well, there's this one song on there (I dunno track titles usually, but I think it's track 10 or 11) where the riff is all harmonics.. it's great. Lots of filler, but it's actually cool filler.

I saw them live once on the I Hope It Lands tour and they were amazing! too bad they aren't still doin shit..... I would agree with Tesla69's recommends as far as starrters..... Strangers from the Universe is an instant classic and I hope It Lands is quite awesome as well.... Mother of all Saints is a bit les unique and more Indie sounding but still very good.
