NYC Advice - Please

I'm going to make my first visit to New York City in January. I'll be staying in the East Village and was wondering/hoping if anyone here could help me out on some decent bars, restarants, diners in the area (or City wide) - the guide books i've bought seem useless. Also, any good record stores that might satisfy my craving for SY rarities, Pussy Galore, Live Skull, stuff like that?

i don't know if you like polish food or not but little poland is good; i think it's on 2nd ave. and it's very affordable.
i like rockit scientist records (it's on st. mark's in the east village below the tattoo place.)

Human Fly 11.30.2006 09:36 PM

Thanks for that, I'm ging to be staying very close to St Marks Place so I'll definitely check it out.

Cantankerous, do you know of a bar called Otto's Shrunken Head? It's in the East Village area and from what I've read it seems pretty good in a kind of Trash/Cramps/B Movie kind of a way. Have you ever been there? is it any good?

search thru old threads for local record stores. lots have been mentioned. if you like philly cheesesteaks try 99 Miles To Philly on 12th St and 3rd Ave. They have waffle fries too.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 12.01.2006 02:09 AM

Someday I think I will have to go this place called New York City.

Cantankerous 12.01.2006 02:13 AM

There's a veggie place that I've recommended two or three times in "I'm going to New York" threads. It always takes me ages to find its name, and I haven't the time right now, but if you do search for the other threads, you'll find it somewhere. It's somewhere around the junction of 3rd or 4th Street and Sullivan, I think.

EDIT - Found it! It's Quantum Leap, and is at 88 W 3rd St, btwn Thompson and Sullivan. Reviews here.

Record shops? Other Music, Downtown Music Gallery, Kims, several others on St Marks.

on the east side there's kim's video for records
also other music, academy records, and (if you wanna take a train to jersey) the princeton record exchange. theres a funky one on avenue a... 215? i forget... i'll google & post more because my memories are shit.

as usual, i recommend avoiding bleeker st. records because it's staffed by unpleasant jackasses.

---

EDIT: on the subject of food, a few of my favorites.
the pastrami sandwich at Katz's, though insanely priced at $13, is certainly worth trying. sure katz's is now a tourist trap but i think/hear it's the last kosher deli in the area. you could also try ben's which is elsewhere but i hear actually better.

chinatown is great there is a vietnamese restaurant on 72 mulberry st. where you can get frog legs. and then there's an ice cream place around there where you can get bizarro chinese flavors like red bean (green tea ice cream is already a commonplace isnt it?).

anyway something else i like is breakfast in that ukranian restaurant on 2nd avenue on the east village. lunch or dinner is too starchy however and overpriced.

when you are there, check out the restaurant guide on the village voice they have a column for cheap places to eat. actually it's perhaps online but you gotta do your homework.

if you're gonna head to jersey, check out vintage vinyl.

give some sort of indication what types of restaurants and bars you like. i'm on vacation but i'll give some good tips sunday night with a little more background.

to start, the jukebox at hifi is killer. that's on ave. a at 11th.

Human Fly 12.02.2006 07:24 AM

In terms of bars, I do't want anything too trendy or touristy. Also, when it comes to restaurants, a lot of the time i'm going to be on my own so places where it's ok for lone diners. Pretty much any type of cuisine is ok. I'm not a veggie so meat options are fine. I suppose what i'm looking for all round is for places (bars, restaurants, delis) where I can sit back, relax, have something to eat and drink, do a bit of people watching, read my newspaper. you know the kind of thing.

thewall91 12.03.2006 12:03 AM

restaurants i like in the east village are, for mexican, mercadito on ave. b and (i think) 11th. there's a bar there that you can eat at so it's perfect for eating alone. it's small plates which people with huge appetites hate but people like me love. best italian is in vino on 4th between A and B; another small plates place with a bar. decent prices too. i haven't been in karma in a while (bar on 1st ave around 4th street) but you can smoke there. i hear the crowd has gotten different but it used to be one of my favorite bars. on ave c there's a great brazillian place called esperanto at 9th, and between 8th and 9th is an australian place called sunburnt cow. manitoba's (bar) on B between 6th and 7th is owned by handsome dick manitoba of the dictators. there are a ton of great bars with great jukeboxes so i'm sure you'll have no prob finding someplace.
