sympathy for the strawberry

surely this song is in your top 5 sy songs?

atsonicpark 03.20.2008 10:15 AM

No, but I have always thought that it is one of the more underrated Sonic Youth songs...

✌➬ 03.20.2008 10:26 AM

Yes it is. One of my favorite Kim Gordon songs.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 03.20.2008 10:59 AM

It's an awesome SY song. Not in my top 5, but close

screamingskull 03.20.2008 11:02 AM

it's great, but Murray Street is wonderfully beautiful from start to finish!

SonicBebs 03.20.2008 11:10 AM

its a wicked song.
I've always thought of it and I Love You Golden Blue as 'together'. Maybe just cause its Kim singing and its chilled as fuck.
Beautiful beautiful beautiful

musefreek 03.20.2008 11:13 AM

what gets me about the song is

1) it's structure
2) climatic build up
3) really strange tones combining discord with pop
4) its eeriness

ya?

krastian 03.20.2008 12:19 PM

Fucking great live, fo sho.

Forensic Scene 03.20.2008 02:58 PM

they fit together

Bollocks_to_Pop 03.20.2008 08:40 PM

One of my all time favorite SY songs. There's just something unexplainable that gets me everytime listening to it. I really wish I could have seen it live, but I doubt they'll ever play it live again.

max 03.21.2008 10:45 AM

wonderufl piece. I'll always remember when they played it live on tv and I was in Chicago and just caught the show by chance... as I couldn't sleep becuz of the jet lag. Amazingness.

pbradley 03.21.2008 02:50 PM

I listend to this song a lot driving in the early morning for a job once. So beautiful.

deflinus 03.21.2008 05:25 PM

not in my top 5 but definitely underated.

barnaclelapse 03.21.2008 06:15 PM

No, but I dig it all the same.

it's a Sonic Youth song

baby bulldog 03.23.2008 06:34 PM

I remember an early version of this tune called Sylvia's Magick Chord.Right about after 911 at a show at the Calvin Theater they opened with it.It ranks right up there with one of the greatest live SY experiences for me.

HaydenAsche 03.23.2008 06:36 PM

One of my favorites.

Thor Anders Aase 03.24.2008 09:36 AM

Beautiful song from a beautiful album.. Not up there with Radical Adult though..

Yes, it is. I completely love this song. The opening guitar sound, up to about 3 minutes, is mesmerising. Great vocal, great production. The highlight of a fantastic album!

DanielCarlson 07.30.2009 05:27 PM

I love it, one of the best Murray Street songs.

FreshChops 07.30.2009 06:52 PM

Probably in my top 10. Def. my fav from the album though. I remember looking most forward to that song live on the Murray St. tour, and it was very nice live. Nice touch w/ Lee on the keys too. Make's me think, a little more of keys in SY song's wouldn't be a bad thing!

Also, one of my favorite of Steve grooves...... straight forward hats and snare but nice kick drum groove to much of the songs credit!

I like it, you just described every one of SY songs! ;)

noisereductions 07.30.2009 07:09 PM

It's not in my Top 5. But it is very high. It probably narrowly beats out "Karenology" as my favorite track on MS.

joe11121 07.31.2009 01:25 AM

Cool song, not in my top 10 or anything, but still a good tune.

Shifty Prophet 07.31.2009 08:54 AM

Favorite song off Murray Street depending on my mood. Some days it will be Karenology or Radical Adults, but usually the Sympathy For The Strawberry is too great.
I would also like to add to everyone's collective enjoyment of this song live.

[Sandbag] 07.31.2009 11:04 AM

♥

edit:FAIL^

one of the best songs ever

barry swedgin 08.01.2009 06:34 PM

I totally agree. I think of a lot of things in general as "together."

I'd say it's definitely in my top 10.

yr 08.01.2009 07:22 PM

In My top 10 for post Goo albums

BushIsAPsycho 08.02.2009 02:14 PM

Hey yeah, I remember them playing that at the Calvin. Did they open with it though? I remember they kind of screwed up the ending a bit, and Kim stared at Steve for awhile looking kind of upset. I also remember driving around the berkshires and listening to it. Def in my top 10.

samuel 08.02.2009 06:00 PM

It's a great conclusion to a great album. However, I would love to hear it stripped down. It could stand strong with so much less going on. It's also the epitome of one of Kim's various vocal styles... "innocent young girl" if you will. It really works here. As for top 5? It just makes my top 5 for Murray Street. I agree with Protectmeyou, "it's a Sonic Youth song." That alone makes it fucking awesome. Still for Sonic Youth's catalog, it's not a stand out for me.

By the way, I love threads dedicated to single songs. It's great to focus on each one for a time.

Torn Curtain 08.03.2009 04:17 PM

I love it.

Thinking about it I think there's a Can vibe to it in the repetitive rhythm.

badgercorn 08.03.2009 07:36 PM

Yeah, love it. Massage The History off the new album is cut from a similar cloth, IMO

killthecaliforniagirls 08.05.2009 04:09 PM

loving it. i´m pretty sure that it´s my favourite sy song. maybe i like peace attack just a bit more. at the moment me and my band we´re totally ripping off sympathy for the strawberry and no one can do anything against it HAHAHA
