I don't like In Utero much either; it's about half brilliant, half awful (Heart-Shaped Box and Rape Me are both just fucking terrible). The brilliant stuff is really brilliant though (VEry Ape, Dumb, Servants, Apprentice). Also, while I'm at it, I don't like Unplugged in NY much. It's alright.

But WISHKAH, INCESTICIDE, a lot of their b-sides/outtakes ("Marigold"! fuck!), and BLEACH are all fucking masterpieces.

HSB and Rape Me are terrible but Bleach is a masterpiece? Okay....

I'm going to cheat a little with this question.

Studio/B-Sides/Outtakes
1)Serve The Servants
2)Aneurysm
3)Sappy
4)Lounge Act
5)Come As You Are

Honorable mentions: Verse Chorus Verse ("In His Hands/Room"), Dumb, Sliver, Blew, Lithium, a bunch of others

Covers/Solo Kurt/Etc
1)Do Re Me
2)Where Did You Sleep Last Night
3)Jennifer's Body
4)Asking For It
5)Oh, Me

I'm probably going to pull In Utero out later.

I'm saying he wrote them, so I'm counting them as Kurt songs, but it's unfair to lump them into songs recorded.

yeah, i've heard the kurt/courtney "Asking For It", but how the FUCK do you consider "Jennifer's Body" to count???

Satan 09.15.2009 08:27 PM

except that he didn't write them, are you smoking crack?

noisereductions 09.15.2009 08:30 PM

um. He sang backup on the demo (and supposedly WAAAAY in the background of the LP version) of "Asking For It." He had nothing to do with "Jennifer's Body."

Maybe yr thinking of "Old Age." Or "It's Closing Soon" (or whateve). Or maybe yr high.

Probably yr high.

noisereductions 09.15.2009 08:32 PM

(ps, Satan, are you a Hole fan? I don't remember either way. As much as I don't want to be... I always have been. Can't help it.)

Jeremy 09.15.2009 08:32 PM

Consider this:

Courtney went from "writing" a song like Dicknail to a song like Violet in two years time. On Pretty On The Inside the songs are credited to Hole. The songs on Live Through this are credited to just Courtney. EVERY Courtney record after that, she had co-writers for every song. Is it a coincidence?

Consider also Nirvana jammed on the Violet riffs a year before Courtney "wrote it", Courtney claimed Old Age was always a Hole song (Even though Krist later said Kurt literally "Threw it away" to her), Listen to the lyrics to Doll Parts; That's Kurt. I'm one of those people are absolutely think Kurt wrote Live Through This.

uh guess what

when i started playing guitar i played on the top two strings with my thumb. i've obviously improved. people improve. bands change. kurt obviously influenced her to write better songs but it's nothing short of sexist to say he wrote them for her. what about celebrity skin? did kurt write all those songs from beyond the grave, huh?

violet was written by courtney love in their van on october 31 1991 outside of a club in minneapolis. she was listening to a tape of nevermind and got pissed that one of her peers wrote something so "fiercely great" so she knocked out the riff and wrote the lyrics about billy corgan and that was that. doll parts was written by courtney about kurt in 1991. before they got together ie when she was still lusting after kurt. early versions appear on an ep called "ask for it" recorded at a john peel session on 17 november 1991.

don't fuck with my hole knowledge baby boy.

He didn't write Celebrity Skin, that record blows. I think he wrote their good record, Live Through This. :p

1. Spank Thru (I wish there was more of this grimy, quirky, nasty grunge that Kurt had in a few songs.)

2. Aneurysm

3. Scentless Apprentice

4. You Know You're Right

5. On a Plain

Satan 09.15.2009 08:43 PM

THAT is your only response?

point proven. now get the fuck out.
