Lee at Film Festival Rotterdam

Lee is one of the jury members of Film Festival Rotterdam's Tiger Awards (competition for promising young film makers). In addition to this, there are two free performances.

monday 31st January 9 pm Lantaren/Venster, Rotterdam.
friday 4th February 6 pm Oude Luxor, Rotterdam.

+ screenings of Simon Werner a Disparu (OST by SY)

should be fun.

(there's also a surprise performance during the festival, could it be...)

pokkeherrie 01.17.2011 09:23 AM

Yeah!

Their was a thread about it earlier.
I think the one on the 31st is with Leah Singer and the 4th is a solo performance.

Didn't know about the Simon Werner a Disparu screenings though... thanks for the info.

edit: 6pm!? I'll have to rush to make it there on time...

EvdWee 01.17.2011 10:43 AM

hm.. i will be deejaying a few days in Lantaarn/Venster during the festival. The Ex is playing there on the first of february.

Hope i can sneak in when Lee is on...

pokkeherrie 01.17.2011 10:54 AM

^^^Cool, didn't know about The Ex either.
I'm guessing they're playing as part of the "Raiding Africa" programme, i.e. probably an "Ethiopian" set w/ maybe guests? EDIT: no, they're not.

It somewhat annoys me that the Film Festival always announces the programme less than a week in advance... as if people don't have other things planned.

Will you be taking requests?

EvdWee 01.18.2011 01:16 AM

as long as we have it on vinyl...

greenlight 01.18.2011 11:53 AM

shit. that's great!

londondaydream 01.19.2011 04:10 AM

30 jan.: Andy Moore (The Ex) + Yannis Kyriakides + Joost Rekveld
22:30 Lantaren/Venster. Film + music

1 feb.: The Ex + F.J. Ossang
21:00 lantaren/venster

pokkeherrie 01.20.2011 04:38 AM

For the awards thing on Feb 4th you need a ticket to get in, but they are free of charge. You can collect them (max 2 per person) at the box office/information desk in De Doelen.

Can't find any info about the performance on the 31st yet, except this:
21:00 IFFR Live Muziek: Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer - Sight Unseen

It says more info will be on the site soon.

Is Sight Unseen a new show? I wonder how much different it will be to Drift.

EvdWee 01.20.2011 08:30 AM

i really have to plan my agenda to see if i can check those out.

pokkeherrie 01.22.2011 05:19 AM

Tickets for Lee/Leah Singer on the 31st cost 5 euro and can be bought here:
http://www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com...-sight-unseen/

Ticket sales started last night and most of the more popular movies have sold out by now. If you want to see Simon Werner A Disparu, there are only two screenings of that and one of them is already sold out:

Do you wear clogs when you watch movies in Holland? I read that on a magazine.

Yeah. :(

It's annoying, but it's the law. If you're not wearing clogs they won't let you into the cinema.

EvdWee 01.25.2011 07:36 AM

got my ticket for the 31st. and for the next day with the Ex also, of course...

wonder if i will be able to get a ticket for the 4th

I'd be happy to pick one up for you - the box office is near my office. When does the "sale" (they're free, right?) start?

EvdWee 01.25.2011 08:31 AM

are you going too?

they are indeed free. today the central cashdesk has opened, so you can collect them there i guess.

thanks!

Yes, if I can find my clogs.

Will zip round there in a sec, work permitting.

EvdWee 01.25.2011 09:07 AM

right on! they are open till 21:00

pokkeherrie 01.25.2011 09:12 AM

^^The central box office has opened today, but the tickets bought online can only be collected from tomorrow onwards. Maybe the same goes for the free tickets, maybe not. I'm waiting until tomorrow or Thursday when it's less busy.

Good point(s). OK, tomorrow it is then!

pokkeherrie 01.25.2011 09:58 AM

tomorrow might be really busy though, being the first day that people can collect their online tickets.

EvdWee 01.25.2011 06:01 PM

Eén van die optredens is de Europese première op maandagavond 31 januari in LantarenVenster van ‘Sight Unseen’ waarin Sonic Youth-voorman Lee Ranaldo live speelt bij beelden gemaakt door filmmaakster Leah Singer.

So Sight Unseen are images by Leah Singer accompanied with Lee Ranaldo's play.

It's not - walked right in around 10:30 am.

Current ticket status:
- Got my own ticket for the January 31 show.
- Might get a guestlist+1 for the same show, so Tokolosh and his friend can film it.
- Picked up 4 tickets for the awards ceremony on February 4th: EvdWee, Tokolosh + friend, me. They had a massive stack behind the information desk, so it might be prudent to arrive early at the venue in case $number_of_tickets >> $venue_capacity.

pokkeherrie 01.26.2011 05:18 AM

Yeah well, after 17:00 o'clock I meant. Not everyone can sneak away from work during office hours.

Oude Luxor holds 900 or so, there should be plenty of tickets.
edit:I thought it said only 2 per person though?

Ok so I might be a third filmer then. Didn't knew Toko was filming. Getting a guestlist fixed as well. Cool see you guys there then.

Lee will be in Rotterdam for a week as a juror for the IFFR International Film Festival Rotterdam. While he’s there he’ll do 2 performances: together with Leah Singer he will present Sight/Unseen, a large scale indoor work for 3 projection screens, 4 track tape, 2 gong players and suspended gtr. This is a reprise of their work of the same name, outdoors, in Toronto last October. Performance will last 90 minutes or so (not 10 hrs this time!) and start at 9pm. Tickets are 5€, and can be bought at the IFFR box offices. LantarenVenster, Address: Otto Reuchlinweg 996, Rotterdam. There is a second, 20 min performance with some short films by Japanese director Tomonari Nishikawa (which are also being shown at the festival) on at the Festival’s Awards Ceremony on Feb 4. You might find some information about this (and more on the festival) here.

EvdWee 01.26.2011 05:11 PM

does anyone have any idea how long the awards ceremony will take?

pokkeherrie 01.28.2011 03:33 AM

no idea. not too long i hope.

gonna give it another try tonight to see if they still have tickets. there was a massive queue at the box office last night, so i left.

Didn't have any problem charming 4 off the cute girls behind the information desk (situated directly to the right of the entrance).

EvdWee 01.28.2011 05:26 AM

played some records yesterday in the new LantarenVenster. Liked it. Also met Carlos.

Also had a look at the venue where Lee Ranaldo and one day later the Ex will perform. Will be awesome.

Jef Mertens 02.01.2011 03:59 AM

Wow, Sight Unseen has a great setup with the suspended guitar, the three screens and two gong players. When people entered the room the film was already screening. People gathered around the light spot above the guitar and when a voice demanded people to sit down, half of them, including me, actually did. Seems I was gonna shoot this performance sitting down, which was a good thing I think afterwards. Acorrding to Lee this performance was quite different then the one from Toronto.

After 5 minutes Lee made 'acte de presence' and started swirling the guitar around as it was dangling above the heads of the people sitting down. Definitely a hard task trying to follow it with my camera. I was especially very amazed by the first 20 minutes of the performance where Lee's actions integrated nicely with the background film of backwards firework and so much more. A lot different then the Drift performance.

Lee also removed the guitar from it's string to go into the crowd and was using his amps on each side of the wall to generate more noise/sounds.
After about 55 minutes Lee finished it off and left stage leaving the, again suspended, guitar hanging in the center. As a conclusion of the gig people approached the guitar using cellular phones and stuffed animals to generate more sounds, maybe to hope for a Lee encore. Afterwards I heard from Lee that this was also part of the Toronto gig where people did this in the middle of the concert.

In the end had a great shoot, was happy to meet Rappard and Pokkeherrie and Rappard and me got to chat some more with Lee backstage.

I will hopefully have a video up soon.

Nitpicking: I think it was more like 10. Otherwise, spot-on review. Haven't checked my recording yet, will do so this afternoon - right now it's back to work!

That's what I really liked about it... I was going in kind of expecting to see a similar thing like Drift, but this was totally different.
Heh, when he took the guitar off and then later reattached it I was kinda worried whether he had secured it firmly, because it was swinging right over my head.

I was wondering if the audience participation afterwards was intended or not, but either way it was cool to "play" Lee's guitar... how many people can say they've done that?
Lee was taking a picture of audience members playing his guitar, it was funny to see the roles of both audience and artist completely reversed.

edit: would be great if you get a video up, Jeff.
I brought a small camera myself, but forgot to charge the battery.

EvdWee 02.01.2011 06:34 AM

i really liked it. was a bit at the back of the room, but liked the shift between the repetitive score and images.

missed the end part though...

Lee told us that he expected the crowd to participate halfway through the performance when he left stage for a short while. Glad I caught some of that on video at the end.

Got a day off today, will check my footage this evening.

Copy of my raw recording (+ md5) is up on Utkonos right now:

Yeah, I really liked the imagery.

You're DJ-ing in the lobby, right? Do you know what time The Ex will be playing tonight?
I've been kind of avoiding them ever since GW Sok left, but when I finally did see them in the new lineup at ATP I was happily surprised how good they still were. They still have a lot of quality.

I'd be up for seeing them tonight, but it just says 21:00 - 2:00am in the schedule... if they're playing around midnight or so then I won't bother.

EvdWee 02.01.2011 08:20 AM

yup i was. won't be tonight. i was at first planning to go see the ex again, but decide i'd better not.

but i'll ask my fellow dj mates (who are dj-ing as we speak ;-) ) to ask someone from the venue, maybe they know.

but considering there are 3 acts i guess this will be the timeframe:

21:00-21:30 anne james chaton
21:45-22:30 zea
23:00-0:00 the ex
0:00-2:00 dj's

but, again, i'll try to find out.

pokkeherrie 02.01.2011 09:40 AM

cheers.
i'd expect it to be finished before midnight, but it'd be nice to know.
