The annual visit from our pal Tom Lax, bringing up yet another assortment of obscuro and extremely special 7" singles wax from Siltbreeze headquarters in Philadelphia. If you've checked out this special in past years you know that you will certainly be hearing a lot of DIY/post-punk and general oddball stuff you will probably not hear anywhere else (and see as well, as we will be posting the sleeve art on the playlist page live). Not to be missed!

Astonishing Legends. If you're interested in going down the rabbit holes of cryptozoology, aliens, conspiracies, and well, legends, then you might find this show fascinating.

My Dad Wrote A Porno. It's a guy reading the porn novels his dad wrote. Ridiculous and hilarious.

The Gilmore Guys. I just started this myself, but I've always loved the show The Gilmore Girls, and promised myself if I ever decided to re-watch the series I'd try and catch the podcasts afterward. It's a little rough going but if you love the show too, you may wan to check it out.

Jen Cloher's Musical Navigators

Quote:

Jen Cloher is a beacon in Australian music. She's one of our best songwriters, and a great champion of her peers. Whether it's running management workshops, or co-founding Milk Records, her sage advice and keen ears propel others. But what about the artists who light a path for her? From Patti Smith to Gareth Liddiard, Camp Cope to PJ Harvey, this is a conversation about so much more than music.

Adalita - "Free Money [Live]"

The Drones - "Taman Shud"

Camp Cope - "The Opener"

PJ Harvey - "The Words That Maketh Murder"

Evelyn Ida Morris - "The Body Appears"

Very articulate, very intelligent, I really recommend this interview. There are other cool Take 5 episodes available as well. And even though it says Apple Podcasts, you don't need any Apple shit to listen; just click "play".

Well whaddayaknow, just now I found another very cool one. I've loved this actor ever since he played an atheist priest on House ("Father Nietzsche", the doc called him...)

The Great John Cage Project - in Lockdown
By John Wills

4:33 is a silent composition by American experimental composer John Cage emphasising the sounds of the listener's environment while it is performed.

Contributors from around the world share their 4:33 recordings in the Coronavirus era to greatjcproject@gmail.com

4'33" isn't about listening to nothing. It's about listening to everything.

Haven't listened to it yet, but the titles at least look promising - none of the pieces is called, "Spreading butter on a piece of bread while I wait for the bloody quarantine to end". Actually, that's not that bad of a title...

I'm not sure if this qualifies for this thread, but when I read (a couple of years ago) that Terminal Drive had finally surfaced in its entirety, my jaw hit the floor, so I decided to share the latest Smog Veil Records newsletter, which I received today:

Quote:

A month back we started our series of FREE streams of entire releases in our catalog. These will run periodically on Fridays from our SoundCloud site. There, you'll be able to listen to entire albums from our numerous releases for FREE. Enjoy the entertainment in these troubling times.

Here's the next in the series, [...] Allen Ravenstine's "Terminal Drive."

Terminal Drive is a studio recording of a mythical piece of electro-acoustic music composed and performed in 1975 by Allen Ravenstine (b. May 9, 1950 in Canton, OH) with assistance from Albert Dennis on string bass. Terminal Drive's significance in terms of Cleveland underground music cannot be understated and has been cited as partially responsible for Ravenstine's invitation to co-form the musical unit Pere Ubu in September 1975. Ravenstine gained recognition for his unusual and inventive synthesizer work in Pere Ubu, which he would also contribute to other groups such as Red Crayola and David Thomas & The Wooden Birds as well as his solo work.

Despite Terminal Drive's legendary status, it is a piece very few have heard in its complete state. Terminal Drive has never been previously officially released in its entirety and no complete recording of the piece could be located for many years. There have also been numerous inconsistencies as to what Terminal Drive's origins and sources were. The Pere Ubu box set Datapanik In The Year Zero (released on DGC in 1996) included a bonus disc of various Pere Ubu-related bands and projects - itself entitled Terminal Drive - that contains a 6:43 track called "Home Life" stated to have been extracted from Terminal Drive. This excerpt was all the world would hear of this fabled yet somewhat mysterious piece of music...until now.

The origins of Terminal Drive lie within the Cleveland band Hy Maya, which was centered around multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Robert Bensick, working most prominently and consistently with synthesist Ravenstine, bassist Albert Dennis, and drummer Scott Krauss. Despite playing only a handful of gigs, Hy Maya's purely experimental and highly improvisational nature working within the contexts of art rock and electronica were unlike anything that Clevelanders - used to the likes of Dragonwyck, Glass Harp, Left End, and Raspberries - had never really seen or heard before. While there had been national bands such as The United States of America and Fifty Foot Hose that featured electronics prominently in their music and set-up, both groups tended to work within the context of more traditional rock structures. Hy Maya, perhaps unconsciously, built upon the wilder aspects of Tonto's Expanding Headband, parts of the 1969 album An Electric Storm by White Noise, and the Sun Ra Arkestra, as well as the collective improvisation methodology of Oregon, prefiguring elements of the industrial music scene that Pere Ubu would later have considerable influence upon.

The single-sided LP was pressed on red vinyl and includes extensive liner notes written by Nick Blakey and never before published photos along with a free download card.

I've been listening to You Don't Know Mojack a lot lately. It's a podcast exploring each release on SST Records, in order, from start to finish. So it has Sonic Youth content.
