Armando Corea did some really tasty work in Circle. Check out Circling In, Circulus, Early Circle, ARC. Also pretty nice as a sideman with Bobby Hutcherson, and Miles, too. Duet ECM record with Gary Burton,Xtal Silence and the associated box set. I agree that some of his output is pretty awful.

Hey here's a link to a pretty nice guitar/oud player

https://gordongrdina.bandcamp.com/

got a chance to see him in solo w/bass player. Very enjoyable stuff, adventurous but lyrical

yeah I mean... it kind of totally is. Like, I feel like the II in the title is less about it being a sequel to the original album, and more about being the start of a 2nd phase for the band. Like it's two bands with the same name.

alright so I almost hate to admit this, but after listening to the first half of that Chick Corea album... I kind of sort of like it a lot. The 70's fusion thing referenced in the press release is real. The instrument pallet and tone really reminds me of stuff like Herbie Hanock's Headhunters or various Weather Report albums of that era. I'm not saying it's the same QUALITY, mind. But it's def a tone that appeals to me.

Sylvie Courvoisier Trio
D'Agala

Quote:

her memorable solo sets, as well as her performances with saxophonist John Zorn and onetime DNA drummer Ikue Mori, she has helped define the sound of the piano for an era and a locale.

Like numerous other contemporary pianists, she plays not only the keys, but also the inside of the instrument—sweeping the strings directly, or plying them with a variety of objects.

Mast
Thelonious Sphere Monk

Quote:

MAST’s Thelonious Sphere Monk is a cosmic journey reinterpreting the great Thelonious Monk Song Book in celebration of his 100th birthday. MAST tackles sixteen Monk compositions, including the acclaimed "Round Midnight," "Blue Monk," "Straight No Chaser," "Epistrophy" and "Well You Needn’t." As well as more obscure titles like "Misterioso," "Pannonica," "Friday The 13th" and "Bemsha Swing." MAST, aka Tim Conley, pays homage to the significant history of Thelonious Monk and his esteemed compositions while bringing them into the future using modern electronic bleeps, bloops, and beats. This is done in concert with the Low End Theory, Los Angeles beat culture Conley is a part of. Harmonious with the mystical and metaphysical hand painted cover art by Japanese artist Tokio Aoyama, each track created is a unique world unto itself and the listener travels from one musical planet to the next on the spaceship Monk.

I got to see Courvoisier seriously abuse the house Steinway grand piano at a local venue, pounding and plucking at the strings and pounding the polished wood. She didn't get invited back, the blue hairs were clutching their pearls!

ha that's awesome.

I feel like I listened to her record w/ Mary H a couple of years ago but I'm kinda fuzzy on it. I might have to revisit.
