I think female fronted groups are the fucking best cause they have more dilemmas than us men.

Pauline Oliveros, Kaiji Saariaho, Delia Derbyshire, Sophia Garibaldi (or whatever her surname is), Yoko Ono, Alice Coltrane (dubious to call her 'experimental' though)... I'm a bit stumped after that.

sonicl 09.27.2006 05:57 AM

Our perpetual friends Lydia Lunch, Diamanda Galas and Jarboe.

Can't and Inca Ore are quite cool. Not as huge fan really but I just thought I'd namedrop them for the fuck of it...

Glice 09.27.2006 06:04 AM

Gay. I should've at least thought of my darling Diamanda.

exactly the same

Toilet & Bowels 09.27.2006 08:46 AM

calling kate bush experimental is something of a liberal interpretation of the facts.

Savage Clone 09.27.2006 09:05 AM

Calling Kate Bush listenable is debatable as well.

I don't like female artists on the singer/songwriter side. There seems to be a proliferation these days. I prefer people like Lydia Lynch, early Hole, Patti Smith, Exene when she was with X--rockers, in other words, experimental or otherwise. I really like the Marble Index album, too.

Gulasch Noir 09.27.2006 09:42 AM

Diamanda Galas - What kind of experimental music does she make? Any similar artists? What's a good album to start with?

_slavo_ 09.27.2006 09:57 AM

Ikue Mori. Tujiko Noriko. Sachiko M.

(all Japanese, not by purpose)

Haco's Bugscape is another fine example of Japanese lady aceness.

HaydenAsche 09.27.2006 11:27 AM

Kate Bush and Bjork are fine ass bitches. I'd do 'em.

I'll edit it to make it less faggish.

Glice 09.27.2006 11:38 AM

Likewise.

Diamanda Galas has been around since the early 80s. She has an incredible voice. She apparently has a 4 octave vocal range which was heavily influenced by a form of German Opera. Quite the set of lungs, a mix of deep satanic sounding low range moving to high-pitched shreiking stuff. The music itself ranges from chaotic goth-influenced, no wave-influenced, creepy circus music-influenced, twisted blues, and other styles. Pretty crazy stuff.

Diven Punishment is good record to start with. La Serpanta Canta is more recent record and has her doing very dark covers of some classic blues, jazz, and motown songs including "See that my grave is kept clean" and "I put a spell on you."

Let's see other "experimental" chicks that come to mind are:

16 Bitch Pile-up
Zeena Parkins
The Magick Markers (well 2/3 of Magick Markers)
Fe-mail
Cocorosie (aren't really hardcore experimental, but its good expansive shit)
Yoshimi from the Boredoms
Jessica Rylan
Ikue Mori
Leslie Keiffer

I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot... because fuck there a lot of girls who like to make them some noise.
