also how do i get windows 7 without paying? is it wise to try to d/l a torrent of it and do it that way

I'd say the best way to protect yr pc would be not downloading an OS from torrents.

I never use Norton and would be unsure of using one I downloaded.

you have to constantly connect to Norton's servers to update viral definitions. pirated copies wouldn't work and freeware times out.
