Official SY Gossip Top 50! Greatest Albums of the 1990s

SYRfox's thread did such a great job and was a lot of fun, now it is time to really go indepth into the 90s, which is debatably the most dense era of music, and inflames the most geekly tense debates in hipster album comparison history

and because of the vast amount out there and with plenty of time to have reflected on it, i shall ask you to PM me your Top 25 albums, i was thinking of doing 20 however with the large amount of great albums (and 5 SY full lenghts) it's just prudent

-> only albums released from January 1st, 1990 to December 31st 1999 included! No reissues, deluxe editions or whatever. No singles either, only albums...

-> Points will be: 25 for #1, 24 for #2, 23 for #3, etc.

-> if you wish to do less then 25, it's fine, but i totally recommend doing as much many as you can

i shall start tabulating next sunday morning, and hopefully will have the post up that afternoon

START YOUR SPINNING!!!

I can't think of 50 great records in the 90's.

batreleaser 10.12.2008 03:20 PM

fuck, i have to make two more changes.

i totally forgot gastr del sol-upgrade and afterlife, which is definitley tied for boredoms at 1.

and i have to trade in darkthrone's "transylvanian hunger", which is my favorite metal album ever recorded, for deicide's "legion".

hope you done mind these ties, but there was one hell of an underground in the 90s. seems like the worse the mainstream is, the better the underground is, case in point the 80s-today.

That came out in the 00's dude. Sorry but it's not that hard to name 10 albums from a decade, no need to name only 1 from another decade.

greedrex 10.12.2008 03:28 PM

Surfer Rosa is from 1988, as is It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.

Don't know if I can do this. I'm pretty bad at making lists.

forgot about this.. great, great album.
unfortunately the only one i've ever heard by them.

atsonicpark 10.12.2008 05:02 PM

I had to double check because I thought for sure it came out in 88 or 89 but it actually came out in the 90's.

There are 1 or 2 SCG releases I like "better" but that's probably their greatest album, so I felt that was the one I needed to include.

Derek 10.12.2008 05:19 PM

1. slint - spiderland
2. john frusciante - smile from the streets you hold (atsonicpark, you still need to listen to this hah)
3. sonic youth - washing machine
4. melt banana - scratch or stitch!
5. the flaming lips - the soft bulletin
6. polvo - today's active lifestyles
7. rodan - rusty
8. shellac - at action park
9. built to spill - perfect from now on
10. deftones - white pony
11. weezer - pinkerton
12. melvins - bullhead
13. sun city girls - torch of the mystics
14. slowdive - pygmalion
15. the jesus lizard - liar
16. my bloody valentine - loveless
17. fugazi - repeater
18. boris - amplifier worship
19. kyuss - blues for the red sun
20. manic street preachers - the holy bible
21. richard youngs - sapphie
22. autechre - amber
23. red house painters - red house painters I
24. the dillinger escape plan - calculating infinity
25. bark psychosis - hex

Obviously not in EXACT ORDER. This was sorta hard. If I could include soundtracks then I'd put Howard Shore's soundtrack to Crash in there.

atsonicpark 10.12.2008 05:21 PM

I forgot all about rusty.

And yeah I need to listen to that frusciante fuck.

Derek 10.12.2008 05:24 PM

Most people think the album's a joke... though I think it's beautiful. Hopefully you'll see my view on it.

You should see the reaction I get when I show the album to Red Hot Chili Peppers fans... they run a mile. Which also brings up another funny point, RHCP spend MILLIONS on their production... yet the majority of tracks on that album were recorded on a shitty tape recorder/boombox.

Most people don't hear the random bong sounds throughout the album hah.

atsonicpark 10.12.2008 05:26 PM

d/l'ing now my friend.

Derek 10.12.2008 05:37 PM

My friend Greg, who's favourite bands include RHCP and Aerosmith, said to me a few months ago that he finally "got" the album and that it's his favourite album now.

I think we became better friends after that haha. Nice to see not everyone around my village is a close-minded idiot.

Glice 10.12.2008 05:50 PM

I've noticed more than one person nominate Melt Banana's Charlie over their vastly superior effort for Tzakik. Pricks.

Derek 10.12.2008 05:51 PM

Well don't look at me, I voted for Scratch or Stitch! Which no one will really agree with, but it's all opinion in the end.

Glice 10.12.2008 05:54 PM

It's a better call. I'm not disagreeing with it. But Charlie is simply the wrong choice.

atari 2600 10.12.2008 06:13 PM

lechaoscestmoi,

Just so you know, I PM'ed pantophobia my top 25 only. Sorry you are so upset that I listed a hundred that you felt the need to neg rep me and call me a "twat." I suppose it's not too far of a stretch to guess that you're a either a sexist idiot or merely an aper of those quirky Brits who quite boringly and routinely use "twat" as a derogatory term. Perhaps you are both. I refrained from any lobbying in the other best of '00s listing thread, but haven't here.

Watch your mouth kid, or you're gonna find yourself floating home.

Derek 10.12.2008 06:27 PM

Can't be arsed to do more than 10:

1. Slint - Spiderland
2. MBV - Loveless
3. Mogwai - Young Team
4. Primal Scream - Screamadelica
5. The Second Tindersticks Album
6. Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister

10. GYBE! - F#A#oo

atsonicpark 10.12.2008 07:32 PM

Charlie is by far my fav. Melt Banana album, followed by Teeny Shiny. The Tzadik one -- is that the live album? Yeah, it's good.

atsonicpark 10.12.2008 08:16 PM

derek, this frusciante album is fucking amazing.

Reminds me of a really heroined-out guy who decided to try to cover lick my decals off baby in its entirety after only hearing it once, with almost no production values whatsoever and no other band members to speak off. Great shit!

batreleaser 10.12.2008 08:58 PM

fuck it im just gonna make a top 25 and get rid of the ties

samuel 10.12.2008 10:04 PM
