I never knew I had a favorite couple...until yesterday.

even if the band doesn't continue, at least you can say "they had a good run", you know?

maropi 10.15.2011 10:51 AM

Whatever has happened, I wish them to enjoy their life even more, from now. Changes are intended to be done for better, I hope they did right.

And regarding Sonic Youth, if the band was over, they would continue with very interesting projects. So, the main issue is them to keep being friends (as difficult as this might be).

EVOLghost 10.15.2011 10:52 AM

I remember haviung a convo with my friends over the summer and I remember telling them "If SY ever just breaks up, with no real reason behind it, I'd probably just off myself"

narlus 10.15.2011 11:05 AM

i wonder if they'll separately move out of western MA and back to NYC.

also: I recognize this hits a soft spot with a lot of y'all, but maybe it's for the best.

how about a little bit less fatalism?

deep cleansing breaths and all that other hippie shit.

step back.

adjust your hemline and just tell yourself that it will ALL BE OK.

greedrex 10.15.2011 11:26 AM

No it won't. I want my SY back.
Now.

floatingslowly 10.15.2011 11:30 AM

exactly

ITT: SELFISHNESS

that said, have your old SY. there's a kitten loose.

narlus 10.15.2011 11:32 AM

this was the last song of theirs that i saw them play onstage (DV69 @ Matador 21). if they don't continue, it's a good memory to go out on.

floatingslowly 10.15.2011 11:35 AM

do you remember where you were when Bradifer broke up?

what kind of face did you make?

jennthebenn 10.15.2011 11:43 AM

Troll face.

dazedcola 10.15.2011 12:30 PM

this is just too surreal i thought the headline was a joke when I first heard it like that fake nmh article from a while back.

I don't know what to say, SY has been a part of me for years it helped me identify who i was when i was a teenager and now the fact that they might no longer be a band is heartcrushing. I'd like to think that T+K could still play in a band together after this but I completely understand if they can't.

Genteel Death 10.15.2011 12:44 PM

Look, the band haven't announced they split up. Let's all do the mourning thing if they eventually do split up. We don't know them personally to assume they couldn't find a way of still playing together And besides, there are four individuals in this band.

RanaldoNecro 10.15.2011 01:14 PM

I would like to go to those shows too. Pricey yes, but might be worth it.

toxic johnny 10.15.2011 01:20 PM

I am now seriously thinking about going to one of the South American shows...

RanaldoNecro 10.15.2011 01:26 PM

It is possible that they go away for a while and come back stronger than ever. Like the Pixies, Primus or Dinosaur Jr.

Maybe a five to seven year break.

RanaldoNecro 10.15.2011 01:27 PM

If someone could share flight info on a Sonic budget I would be eternally grateful.

hevusa 10.15.2011 02:05 PM

Time for Thurston to release his version of Beck's Sea Change. Or was that demolished thoughts??? sorta felt like it.

them splitting just makes me want to stay single for life. fuck it.

I don't think the Pixies came back stronger than ever. :(

I'm going. Bought tix + airplane tix today (November 14th - it's in my country, though, but another state). Rationally, I could not have spent that money, but I would not forgive myself if I missed it.

RanaldoNecro 10.15.2011 02:37 PM

I would think that the music is highly personal. i couldn't see them play something that is not 100% involved. They are just not the band to phone it in.

Pelle 10.15.2011 02:53 PM

According to this swedish newspaper http://www.expressen.se/noje/extra/1...na-skiljer-sig
The band wont stop. "...but the band will keep playing."

forkimified 10.15.2011 03:17 PM

Sigh. Best wishes to both of them.

(although I have to admit, on hearing this, my first thought was... I hope nothing's happened that will ruin the music for me.)

SONIC GAIL 10.15.2011 03:59 PM

This sux. Will I ever get to see them live now? They wee a dream couple. I admired their relationship. Suppose all things must pass.

Pelle 10.15.2011 04:18 PM

Hopefully they're still good friends...I don't know why they would break up but I doubt they never will speak again.

If they could focus more on the band would actually be pretty fucking good.

See, this is what makes me feel weird about this whole situation.
What could occur that would cause them to break up after so long?
If it wasn't an *occurence* so much as a growing apart... I could understand.
But I can't help thinking 'did something happen'.

Then again, I know nothing about their personal lives at all.

Thin_icE 10.15.2011 05:53 PM

What the fuck. I'm still drunk from lunch with wife & friends, I come in here only to reply to the TYPB thread and see this. Seriously, the world is coming to an end.
Ok, I'm drunk and I'm over reacting, it's their life and they know better than I, or any of us, do. But I can't help but feel sad, and hope that these news are a hoax, given that they were one of the most lovely, out of the spotlight, couples in rock ever.
Regarding SY's future, if this is true, it will more likely come to halt very soon, so I'm already buckling up and bracing for impact, even though after this one, nothing surprises me anymore.

RanaldoNecro 10.15.2011 06:15 PM

I could see SY continue without KIM. Sadly.

I think the first thing one should consider is that they are finishing up these south american dates. That alone tells me that neither of them did something so bad that the other can't stand to be around them. From what few pieces I've been able to put together, I'm thinking that this was a mutual decision. I doubt they are "burned out" on each other. No doubt they love each other...but after so many years of touring/living with one another I can see how they may be interested in a little space. Space for what? Who knows...maybe to explore other people or just the feeling of being free to do whatever one wants (whether it involves other relationships or not). I'd honestly be shocked if the band dissolved over this. Something strange has been in the air over the past few years. Thurston's last solo record seemed wildly "personal" when compared to the majority of his efforts. Who knows. I've always admired their relationship, but beyond that I've always admired the music they've created together more. Ultimately, thats all that matters or should matter to me. If they are happy, I'm happy for them. Maybe they just need a break in the way some long term couples do, and then they're back together after realizing certain things. Maybe not. Whatever, it's their business. Thus far, we know that the band was planning on working on a new album here soon. Also, we haven't heard any change in those plans. Until we do, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Yeah, I realize, or think, hearing a few of the songs live they've played in the past might feel a bit weird. Maybe seem a bit "forced" if they aren't a unit. But whose to say they are even to play those songs, and whose to say that they may not still enjoy playing these songs. They are, regardless of anything, united over the fact that they've had a daughter and their careers at least somewhat depends on each other (i.e. I'm willing to bet Sonic Youth is still both of their more comfy source of income). No reason to stress anything. They were together 27 years, that's a way better run that what most can claim. I'm proud/happy for the both of 'em. Nothing has yet been said that should lead anyone to believe that this is any cause for alarm as far as the band or their friendship is concerned. Just "KIm an Thurston are separating". No reason to stress.

But yeah, even I must admit it's definitely weird.

i concur, along w/ everything else you said. I couldn't imagine keeping on as a band if it were me, but who knows? sheesh, feels rotten for long time fans, but who knows? its not our lives, they know what's best for them.

Nope, this reminds me of the ...Jet Set... period, when Lee was supposed to have quit the band and later Thurston said that SY was the ensemble of those four persons.
If Kim leaves, SY ends.

I don't see the point. That would truly be one of those situations where keeping the band name would be the wrong move.

They certainly have the chops to do so, but a key ingredient would be missing.

Pelle 10.15.2011 07:10 PM

Anyway, I just want to know why they're doing this..that's the only thing that's interesting me right now..

Alan ciccone 10.15.2011 07:27 PM

This is really shit
