What do you call those handheld noise boxes Lee and Thurston have?

They were getting some terrific scary noises out of them last night. When I saw The Locust they had one too. What are those things?

Danny Himself 07.01.2006 06:31 PM

Guitars?

marleypumpkin 07.01.2006 06:34 PM

Tape recorders?

val-holla-ing 07.01.2006 06:36 PM

i haven't seen them this tour, but you're probably talking about the "buddha machine"

DoubleNickels 07.01.2006 11:09 PM

Maybe he's talking about effect pedals?

there cool but it makes the DIY experiment too easy

acousticrock87 07.01.2006 11:52 PM

Ya it does kind of seem like cheating a bit. But I'm a little interested. I'm gonna buy one I think, just to check it out. All the descriptions I've heard are really vague, and at the very least it could trip people out.

yeah ill probably buy one too. Maybe I learn from the internal schematics of it...

made me laugh as well

acousticrock87 07.02.2006 12:30 AM

Just ordered one off eBay on an impulse. We'll see just how great these things really are...

sonicderek 07.02.2006 04:06 PM

so, what exactly does this thing do?

Danny Himself 07.02.2006 04:07 PM

It's like a walkman that only plays one tape. Just drones, really. You can alternate between them with a switch or just let them play out. Pretty neat, but nothing you couldn't do yourself.

val-holla-ing 07.02.2006 04:25 PM

i think they'd be interesting to chop up and manipulate (the sounds, that is), and use to make different sounds and drones than the 9 (i think) that are initially offered.

if brian eno bought 9, why shouldn't you buy 1 </joke>

hiland 07.02.2006 04:37 PM

are you talking about the budda box?

val-holla-ing 07.02.2006 10:13 PM

yep, but it's the buddha machine.

I dont think it would be easy at all...

You would have to create 9 audio cassette loops(not easy) of varying lengths, get them to run independently through the output as well as with eachother, and fit them inside a walkman size container with an LED and speaker running in it as well, not to mention space for batteries. $25 is well worth it....

HaydenAsche 07.02.2006 11:39 PM

Homemade tape loops are easy enough and much more original.

why yes they are. the machines ruin the diy attitude and shouldnt be used for musical production...

scott v 07.02.2006 11:52 PM

I have a buddha machine soundbox, that i bought at Kim's in NYC (they also had them at the Whitney Museum) they are quite interesting alone or played thru an effects chain. 9 different loops each about 2-5 seconds long of electronically made misc. buddha music used for worshipers to chant to (obviously), but they have taken hold as an interesting tool for experimntal musicians/artists. it has a mini stereo output (1/8") so just got an adapter to run to a stereo -> mono 1/4" plug to plug into a std. guitar amp. /effects pedal.

i don't use mine very much, kinda just and interlude between songs for my band, i guess i prefer to run a internal feedback loop instead by plugging my input guitar cable to the output of a stereo effect pedal... it generates a constant tone and w/ misc fuzz/distortion, phaser units you can get soem crazy sounds.

acousticrock87 07.03.2006 12:08 AM

Does it actually use tape, or a microchip? How would they fit 9 tape loops in there? The only blank cassettes I have are plastic-welded or some crap like that. I can't even open them. So I have no experience making loops.

m^a(t)h 07.03.2006 12:34 AM

i think i remember reading that they were analog but im honestly not sure, the schematics on their site certainly do not help...

m^a(t)h 07.03.2006 12:35 AM

they wouldnt put nine tapes in there, it would just be tape and reels, ever seen an analog echoplex guitar pedal?

acousticrock87 07.03.2006 12:40 AM

Nah I'm not really familiar with that stuff. I wish I were, it would be really useful. But I found this on the ad for the one I bought on eBay.

"The Buddha Machine is a small soundbox made in China which comes with an integrated speaker, a volume control, mini jack-out and a switch to choose between nine different loops which are stored on a small chip and can be directly played by this mini soundsystem."

I thought I had read something about a chip, but all the talk of tape confused me.

renderful 07.03.2006 12:45 AM

So what is the term for the box? I'm having trouble finding any info on google or wiki.

acousticrock87 07.03.2006 12:47 AM

Buddha Machine

m^a(t)h 07.03.2006 12:49 AM

well then fuck that... i dont play with no digital shit.

renderful 07.03.2006 12:50 AM

thanks, man

supergo 07.03.2006 01:51 AM

the thing is, L & T don't even use them onstage

yes they have, especiallly loop 9 played with 5-6 machines, and the others routed through their laptops.

candymoan 07.03.2006 07:59 AM

they look cool..

according to many, they do...

jean-nicolas 07.03.2006 12:36 PM

I saw Lee using one at the Drift show in Brussels earlier this year.

acousticrock87 07.14.2006 04:14 PM

The quality is not what I hoped for, but it picks up really well on guitar pick-ups, so it doesn't have to plug into anything to go over an amp. Definitely over-priced, but it's pretty cool. I got the hot pink one, though.

I would be wishing for the hot pink one.

acousticrock87 07.14.2006 06:30 PM

Ya the color is growing on me. But now that I've been messing around with it a bit, this thing is pretty fucking rad. Adds nice ambience. Actually makes obnoxious noise effects sound much more pallatable.

finding nobody 07.14.2006 06:34 PM

do you have any recordings?

acousticrock87 07.14.2006 06:56 PM

Nope. Nothing to record with. I should get some kind of input thing though for recording. There are some videos of them on YouTube, though.

kingcoffee 07.15.2006 12:04 AM

Lee uses a Mooger Fooger Ring Modulator and a Line 6 delay. Thurston uses an MXR Phase 90 phaser. Maybe that's what yr talking about?
