The Mazzy Star Thread

Mazzy Star - Mazzy Star was a dream pop/alternative band formed in 1989 from the ashes of a band called Opal, a collaboration of guitarist David Roback (of the eighties paisley underground group Rain Parade) and bassist Kendra Smith (of Dream Syndicate fame). They were later joined by Smith's friend Hope Sandoval (b.1966) as the vocalist. Kendra Smith soon left the band. Mazzy Star is probably best known for the song "Fade Into You," which brought the band some success in the mid-1990s and was dream pop's biggest mainstream hit. Roback and Sandoval were the creative center of the band, with Sandoval writing most of the lyrics and Roback composing most of the music. Although the band never officially broke up (it is dormant), Sandoval would go on to found the band Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, and appear on recordings by Bert Jansch, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Chemical Brothers, and Death in Vegas. Sandoval's voice is lovely; however, the band overall is crap.

I have to admit, though, that I do like their cover of "Wild Horses."

wild horses, i havent heard that.
and i know in comparison with sonic youth or in my case Elliott Smith they do suck, but they are still better than anything in the music charts.

They're not bad enough to be offensive; they're just a bit fluffy.

If you haven't heard that cover, though, I'd recommend it. A nice aural indulgence. It won't beat the Stones, but it's still noteworthy.

You listen to Cat Power. You have no credibility.

David Roback is a far better guitarist than people give him credit for. Listen to early Rain Parade or Opal stuff; it's fucking great.
I loved Mazzy Star, even though they sort of exuded contempt for their audience in a live setting.

We should all learn a valuable lesson from Diesel's skills of seduction.

I think I need some "alone time" now..

I concur; I've got no issues with skill. Mazzy Star just got too poppy for my tastes. An indulgence in some cases, but overall, not my cup of tea.

Savage Clone 05.09.2006 10:45 AM

Yeah, it's all about the moodier pieces like Ghost On A Highway, etc. for me.

She's hot, so she's allowed.

Savage Clone 05.09.2006 10:57 AM

For a waif-girl, she is severe hotness.

Everyneurotic 05.09.2006 11:04 AM

i thought they we are the worst bunch of ironic, super arrogant indie assholes ever when i first saw them on later with jools holland, but now i like a couple of their songs, might check out an album.

It's the lips.

They are awesome. 'So Tonight that i might see' is a complete masterpiece and the other two records are pretty good as well. I still haven't heard Hope Sandoval's solo record, but it's on my horizons.

krastian 05.09.2006 02:23 PM

Mazzy. Now there is something to go to sleep to.

Hannah 05.09.2006 02:37 PM

I like them. Obviously not every band is going to be as good as sonic youth. And Hope Sandoval is hot.

dazedcola 05.10.2006 12:14 PM

I wouldn't consider mazzy star pop music really. Only thing that would come close is fade into you that has a hook. Mazzy also uses distortion and wah wah in some of their songs. Roback great guitar work perfectly compliments Sandovals soothing vocals. So Tonight That I might See is a classic.
