Question for over-25s
 

Do you ever feel that you shouldn't get into a newer band simply because most of their fans are in high school or college and it might make you look immature?

Not really, I still listen to many if not most of the same bands I listen to when I was in high school and college. Isn't that the audience that much of the indie, and underground music is trying to appeal to anyways?

I hate most bands with members under 30.
Because they suck.

If I narrowed my listening down to bands of my age I'd be stuck playing my old Wedding Present albums.

long answer- no, why even ask the question.. age means fuck all in the greater scheme of things.... im 33 and i am beginning to get these guys who are 18 coming up to me and saying "yoou like that aincent band pixies dont you"!!! fuck that shit, its life, get over it!

never. a band's fanbase is of little consequence when i am determining if they are worth my time and money.

i'm 42 anyway, so i'm used to being older than most people in the room (obviously depending on the band, but for that Deerhunter/TNV/Vivian Girls show last week, i was an extreme outlier).

Never mind about band members or fans, it's when you discover you're older than your local MP that anxiety really starts to set in!

I've noticed that the musicians I like these days tend to be a fair whack older than me, but I've got no worries with listening to stuff by bairns. Seems a bit of a ridiculous question.

I feel ashamed I like Franz Liszt because most of his "fans" are over 60.

it's when people say stuff like this (first post) that leads me to assume that they listen to music to fit in rather than because they like it, and it makes me want to slap them silly.

To OP - bollocks to that, if you like said band, then who cares about who listens to them? Granted, it be a tad problematic if said band is Skrewdriver, mind...

I guess the short answer is, "no".

I LOVE when I see young people making music, and am likely to be much more tolerant of it than music being made by older people, because they are being brave and trying things out. Of course most of my favorite musicians have been around the block quite a few times though.

I could give a fuck what age an audience is. Last time I saw Sonic Youth, the crowd was broken up between the all ages section by the stage and the drinking section in the balcony. Those kids in their 20s and 30s looked like fucking bloated dinosaurs sitting up in the balcony while I was down rocking out right next to the band with the high school crowd. There was a 12 year old not far from me.
