Rhys Chatham performing live Kosmische Club Oya Festival 2007

Play Now

NY underground legend Rhys Chatham performing live in Oslo August 2007. The insistent motorik rock n roll pulse that runs from Bo Diddley to Neu! to Tony Conrad to The Ramones is captured by Rhys Chatham, the crowd rapturously lost in the joy of repetition (as Hot Chip would have it) the sublime object always just over the horizon. He played as part of kosmische night events at the Oya Festival. This is a full performance of Guitar trio which been influential on groups like Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca, Band of Susans, Helmut and the swans.

“Written in 1977, Guitar Trio is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and with good reason. With a single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty, overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the elemental fury of the Ramones. The amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding father of the notorious No Wave movement.”

The Experiment is a monthly podcast commissioned by the ICA and presented and produced by Kevin Quigley and Jim Hammond.

From Brooklyn's fantastic noisenik record label - Heat Retention records we have Embarker who is a thrash/melodramatic live electronic glitch wizard and the intensely noisey Blastocyst.

Also this month we have the antipodean icy sounds of Synaesthesia Records with a selection of their artists - Snawklor, Candlesnuffer, Francis Plagne and Delire.

We have great, haunting sounds from the ever impressive Ghost Box Label from two of their exotic sampling artists - Mount Vernon Arts Lab and The Focus Group.

Finally we have two solo artists - the droning sound art of Cheapmachines and the wonderful otherworldly investigating music of Oren Ambarchi.

gench concert archives

Presenting selected solo and collaborative performances by Thomas Dimuzio and friends. Experience each concert in its entirety as it unfolds from beginning to end. Available exclusively through Gench Music as specially priced CD-R's ($8 each or five for $32) and as free MP3 excerpts below.

Thomas Dimuzio live samples and processes multiple sources of audio signals in real-time, much akin to a real-time digital musique concrete machine. Signal feeds intercepted from his collaborators along with MIDI-controlled feedback, ambient microphones, shortwave radios, field recordings, circuit-bent toys, and original audio source recordings are integrated and mixed into his system of interactive electronics. More than a collection of gadgets and wires, Dimuzio has devised a musical instrument allowing detailed and rich aural abstractions to be improvised and realized in real-time. A versatile environment allowing the artist to explore deep aural realms as a soloist and integrate effectively within an ensemble.

http://www.gench.com/concert-series.html

The Thomas Dimuzio and Anla Courtis excerpt is beyond aceness.

sarramkrop 02.22.2008 04:21 AM

Cool, I'm glad. I'm listening to it myself. I love it especially when it gets to 6:30 and it starts sounding pulsating, repetitive and cyclic. Ace.

sarramkrop 02.22.2008 04:22 AM

Fuck, it does take off wonderfully there, doesn't it?

sarramkrop 02.22.2008 04:46 AM

I haven't listened to that one yet, but I'll do it soon. I'm on my fourth time in a row listening to the Dimuzio/Courtis track. Ordered some Anla Courtis yesterday and Dimuzio is next in line. Some of Anla Courtis' music I was familar with before, Dimuzio I knew by name but had never listened to anything till I found the Gench website.

pokkeherrie 02.23.2008 05:05 PM

I thought this was pretty interesting, even if it's more for historical reasons than for the music, which are mostly well-known hits. US Army pirate radio in Vietnam:

Radio First Termer – January 1971 [pt.1 of 4]

The time is January 1971. The place is Saigon, The Republic of Vietnam. A 22-year-old US Air Force sergeant, tired of the bland programming served up to the troops by the official US military broadcasting service, takes to the airwaves to bring his comrades a more entertaining alternative. Radio First Termer is on the air!
Broadcasting at 69 MHz from a makeshift pirate radio studio in a back room above a downtown Saigon brothel, using equipment procured via “midnight supply,” disc-jockey “Dave Rabbit” and his studio engineer “Pete Sadler” carried out their mission to “bring vital news, information, and hard acid-rock music to first-termers and non-reenlistees in The Republic of Vietnam”---to give their fellow troops a laugh and a break from the absurdity of a war they could not win.
“Dave” and “Pete”, assisted by the lovely “Nguyen,” launched Radio First Termer on New Year’s Day 1971 and continued to broadcast three hours a night for most of that month of January. Figuring that if they continued to broadcast any longer they would eventually be busted, they decided to lay Radio First Termer to rest after a successful run of 21 days.
For those of you not fluent in military slang, a “first-termer” is an enlisted military member serving his first hitch (enlistment) in the service---as opposed to a “lifer,” who is a career service member. Lifers are planning on staying in the military “for the duration.” “Non-reenlistees” are guys who have chosen not to continue military service when their current hitch is complete.
Presented here (in four parts) is the only known existing recording of a Radio First Termer broadcast.
WARNING: If you are offended by vulgarity, profanity, and crass sexual references, it is recommended that you do not listen to Radio First Termer. As “Dave” puts it, “...We’re an underground radio station here, and we say what we feel like saying...”
“Good Night Vietnam and Good Luck!”

nice!
shitty website but awesome playlists.
thanks

Savage Clone 02.24.2008 03:34 PM

Yeah, I don't know about the look of that site, but they have been supporting our stuff since the 1990s back when they were a print magazine.
What they lack in design sensibilities, they more than make up for in sincerity, loyalty and enthusiasm. Great people; real music fans.

A Thousand Threads 02.24.2008 03:39 PM

It's ok. I like ugly websites.

SHOW 5

Greetings NMD’ers! Welcome along to show number 5. As you’d expect, we have a host of brand new tunes to wrap your ears around and we also have a momentous live mix from Drum and Bass setup ‘Current Value’.

Current Value is also known as Tim Eliot. He hails from Berlin and boasts a carnal knowledge of all things beats. Following a sound grounding in classical piano, Tim has developed into something of a drum and bass maestro and is signed to a whole host of labels including Freak Recordings, Soothsayer, <A href="http://www.myspace.com/techitch">Tech Itch and
Evol Intent. He’s graced us with a 20 minute mix, so make sure you have a listen! You can find out more about Current Value here.

We’re also sending out get well wishes to producer Hermeet, who is currently residing in his bed with a gargantuan sick virus of some sort. Don’t worry though, we’ll make sure that as soon as he can put earphone to ear he’ll be back to scouring the earth for the best new music he can find.
