Current 93-Black ships ate the sky

I finally have it in my hands!

porkmarras 08.09.2006 11:49 AM

And very good it's turning out to be too.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 12:07 PM

Fuck this is good good like i mean, good good.So far my favourite tracks are:
Dissolution of the boat million of years
Bind your mouth
Black ships seen last year south of heaven
Idumea(with Marc Almond)

Marc Almond's voice is on top form on that one

Toilet & Bowels 08.09.2006 12:23 PM

i've never really got the appeal of current93, but it's almost a really great album title, that if it was just not "ate" and something else would make me want to own it.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 12:25 PM

fair enough

Savage Clone 08.09.2006 12:41 PM

It has Ben Chasny on it, if that helps.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 12:43 PM

And there are some rather good songs on it.My least favourite voice on the album is Anthony Hegarty's.Somehow it doesn't fit into the whole picture.

Kyohan 08.10.2006 12:49 PM

The whole album is incredible - I love C93 anyway, but this is the most complete album they've produced in a long time. I expect its probably a little more accessible to newcomers than most C93 output too.

porkmarras 08.10.2006 12:51 PM

Agree,agree,agree.It's on the stereo now.

porkmarras 08.10.2006 12:51 PM

Still not completly sure about Hegarty's voice yet.

sonicl 08.10.2006 01:17 PM

I'm sorry, your Porkness, but I have a problem with this. I keep reading the thread title and thinking it says "black chips ate the sky". I'm afraid I just can't get past that.

porkmarras 08.10.2006 01:20 PM

Oh well........

Signpost 08.10.2006 03:28 PM

Very good album.

Glice 10.25.2008 03:55 PM

I've been listening to this record loads lately. Utterly magnificent, but Hegarty's tracks are pretty poop, disappointingly. Tibet's hysteria doesn't always sit too squarely with me, but it's on top form here. If I were doing a 'Glice's records' type thread I'd do one for this record.

Has Bonny Prince Billy done any covers records? He does a great job when it's not his own songs. I like some of his stuff, but he'd be better off doing that country thing of standards.

Glice 10.25.2008 05:08 PM

Shirley here too, though the aforementioned Bonny Prince Billy version is pretty top.

Thanks for the heads-up on the covers record, I'll hunt that down like a pig in some sort of pig-hunting place - pig huntery? Yes, that's the ticket.

pbradley 02.27.2009 03:39 AM

OMG, old thread.

I've been listening to this album a lot ever since I became rather obsessed with "Black Ships Seen Last Year South Of Heaven" on Current 93's myspace (I think the first time myspace turned me onto to something?) not long ago.

Baby Dee's, Antony's, and Clodagh Simonds' are my favorite versions.

Sonic Youth 37 02.27.2009 03:55 AM

I have had this album for about 4 months but have yet to listen to it because Dogs Blood Rising and Nature Unveiled unsettle me so. I might have to dig it out in the summer...during the day.

pbradley 02.27.2009 03:59 AM

It's not all that scary. I mostly listen to it before I sleep as it's really soothing.

Sonic Youth 37 02.27.2009 04:01 AM

Cool. Just the name "Current 93" triggers rumblings and dronings of "Maldoror" in my head and I have to go think happy thoughts.

batreleaser 02.27.2009 01:50 PM

whenever i see something like current 93 or nurse with wound at a mainstream record store i always buy thier shit just because they are like the underground bands whos stuff can sometimes be found in sam goody. so the point is i have so much shit from those bands that i rarely listen to them at all. nurse with wound i dont like much of except the 90s stuff, but pretty much every current 93 album is at least worth hearing.
