hey blaster

I have heard allusions to beck TRYING to work verbal magic a la Dylan, but I have never ever read or heard anyone say he compares in terms of musical output, quality, influence, etc.

again, I stated I do not liek Beck. I find his sound old and tired with bleep bleep noises and some wack wack WACK DJ scratchin'

just a personal opinion.

the lenny comparison is apt to a point though, both adapt old sounds, old styles, but the difference lies in that lenny is a traditionalist and really seeks to imitate while beck is a progressive and seeks to add new things to the amalgasm of influences he draws from.

Best post ever, context considered.

beck ripped off ween's "pure guava".

EVERYBODY who was listening to ween and beck during that time knows this to be the truth. Too bad you missed out!

Just so you know.

"GOLDEN FEELINGS" release: 1993
"PURE GUAVA" release: 1992

khchris(original) 06.28.2006 05:38 PM

"Golden Feelings" release: 1993
"The Pod" release: 1991(recorded in 1990)

want more proof? had enough, ass?

Nice to see the Art Blakey shoutout Rob....that's what I'm talking about.

Oh and....

Come on, this shit can go around in circles forever. Just because there are similarities between albums doesn't mean that one sat down and ripped off a record.

Norma J 06.28.2006 06:49 PM

I did not know there was a new Beck album in process. That's good news.

Can't be proven, but it was me and a whole lot of people's thoughts when we all heard "Mellow Gold" for the first time.

listen to early ween(pure guava-era) and you'll know exactly where beck got his inspiration, influence, and possibly ideas from.

case closed.

love the pure guava...oh so pure

the pod is sweet too

/././

the beck man-boy is hit-&-miss

maybe's he's more of an artist than a musician at heart

he makes good stuff, but he didn't enjoy that sustained of an artistic summit really...if you know what i mean, er...ah...somethin' somethin g

Beck for the most part is really good. I think he often writes really funny lyrics, AND makes great music. Anything he does I'm up for listening. Midnight Vultures is one of my absoulute favorites albums, and my favorite from him. The only one I had a tough time getting into was Mutations. Was very repeative. Every artist has influnces, but no, I don't see Beck as ripping off anyone. Sure you can compare him to similar artists like Ween or The Flaming Lips, doesn't mean he's ripping them off.

atari 2600 06.28.2006 08:27 PM

oh...what did I miss about Art Blakey?
http://www.duke.edu/~aks2/jazz/dis.htm
I was listening to a version with Thelonious today of "In Walked bud" that blew my mind. & then I listen to The Ultimate Bud Powell & heard "Fantasy in Blue"...musical ecstasy/../

Personally, I do think Mellow Gold, Beck's best major release, is better than Pure Guava though...but it's not such a disparity of quality that I would ever insist on debating over it.

ultimately though...
isn't the "funny" thing just a self-defense mechanism due to insecurity?

I swear I love the promotional pre-dgc beck recording...it's genuinely hilarious & musical & shows a great degree of promise of blossoming talent, but to always fall back on the humor thing is a pitfall. Frank Zappa was a great composer, but for lack of better lyrics, he is another victim of the same sort of predispostion.

Many, many artists try to be funny & yet also sublime at the same time ala the rare acheivement of greats like John Lennon & Bob Dylan, & in the end, fail miserably.

atari 2600 06.28.2006 08:38 PM

glad you can appreciate horns, arrangement & production, AssBlaster.

Yeah, Midnite Vultures is great Beck...& better than Odelay.

atari 2600 06.28.2006 08:51 PM

my phrasin was off then

the arrangements & prodcution are what make it
like a pomo bowie record almost (in that regard...& there you have yr ween comparison in a germ)
../>in the final analysis, the horns are just there as flourish to pay testimony to the strength of the compostions...it's no Bird, Trane, Freddie, Miles, Warne...it's no Savoy Truffle even...God no...but it's cool/./.

acousticrock87 06.28.2006 08:57 PM

Reminds me of the Beck v. Bjork v. Bach Celebrity Deathmatch.

"Midnight Vultures was such a weird album."

Scarecrow from Guero has the touch of His Royal Badness.

The two approached him about cutting some folk songs backed with hip-hop beats, and Beck agreed. Gathering in the kitchen of up-and-coming hip-hop producer Karl Stephenson, Beck recorded "Loser" and a selection of other tracks. In 1992, Beck traveled to Olympia, WA, to record for Calvin Johnson's K label, and also inked a publishing deal with BMG. At the beginning of 1993, Beck finally saw his first official releases: the single "MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack" on Flipside, and the full-length, cassette-only Golden Feelings on Sonic Enemy. In September, Bong Load finally released "Loser" as a 12" single, and it became an instant smash on L.A.'s independent radio stations, so much so that Bong Load had trouble pressing enough copies to keep up with the demand. Combining a funky drum-machine track and Beck's nonsense raps with bluesy slide guitar and a sample of Dr. John's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters," "Loser" sounded like nothing else. Word spread quickly, helped out by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, who raved about Beck after seeing him perform at a backyard party. A major-label bidding war ensued, and Beck signed an innovative contract with Geffen that allowed him to continue releasing uncommercial material on smaller independent labels. In the meantime, another indie album, the 10" record A Western Harvest Field by Moonlight, was released in January 1994 by Fingerpaint. "

It sounds to me like I was right about the Mellow Gold stuff being recorded in 1991.

Just because it was released in 1994 doesn't mean it was recorded after "pure guava". Perhaps Beck's stuff was even recorded first?

"The Pod" was recorded in 1990, a year before Beck even recorded anything.

Norma J 06.28.2006 09:11 PM

I think Guero is a really good album, it's more consistent than say Mellowgold. Mellowgold would have some of my favourite songs on it, but it's not as consistent as other Beck albums. It's tough to pick a favourite Beck album for me.

As for his lyrics, I don't necessarly find them funny. Sure they're witty, and some lines can make you smirk, but to call them funny is to call them stupid, and they're anything but stupid. He writes great abstract lyrics from a stream of consciousness. His music (lyrics included) are always interesting, which is few and far between when it comes to musicians and artists in general, these days.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 06.28.2006 09:18 PM

uhmmm i am a HUGE ween fan
a little more than beck

i dont think mellow gold sounds like pure guava at all
sure there are some SMALL similarities but one could say the same thing about many other artists

so uhh yeah
i dont know what you all are talking about
beck isnt ripping off ween

atari 2600 06.28.2006 09:19 PM
