robert wyatt appreciation

why hasnt there been a thread for this reason yet? wyatt is responsible for as much amazing and beautiful music as any in the 20th and 21st centuries. between the first five soft circle albums, and all of his solo albums, i cant think of one that is bad, and more than a couple that are anything less than breathtaking. personally, i think last year's 'comicopera' was his career highlight, and the best album of the year, outbesting even stars of the lid. his voice is one of the most incredible things ive ever heard. top ten wyatt/soft machine (w/ wyatt) albumd:

1. comicopera
2. ruth is stranger than richard
3. volume 2
4. a short break
5. rock bottom
6. shleep
7. soft machine
8. nothing can stop us
9. third
10. fifth

now, worship wyatt!

I think side two of the first Matching Mole LP is among the best music I own.

End of an Ear is an underrated gem. Ruth is Stranger Than Richard is probably my favorite though.

Have been listening to Schleep and rock Bottom this morning.
I wonder what i should get next.
I was drooling over the EPs boxset; is this any good?
Is the Ruthis stranger... LP as good as Shleep and Rock bottom?
I need some rocket science here.

I've been listening to Rock Bottom a lot myself recently. A true great.

I've never been into him much. He's never really grabbed me.

sarramkrop 05.23.2009 08:46 AM

I'll never tire of The Soft Machine. I don't really know his solo work well, could you please make a list of records that I should check out?

demonrail666 05.23.2009 09:21 AM

Rock Bottom is my favourite and, along with his early singles collection Nothing Can Stop Us, would make a good introduction. I'm tempted to recommend anything by him to be honest, but a lot of people seem to not like Dondestan - although I think it's great.

Rock Bottom is a masterpiece - definitely in my top 100 albums ever. The only other album I have from him is Shleep, which has a lot of elements about Wyatt's music that I like, but it never took onto me the way Rock Bottom has. Still a good album nonetheless.

I really should listen to more of his albums.

Oh yeah, and Soft Machine's first three are fantastic, especially Third.

As good as Rock Bottom and better than Shleep IMO. It has a few Wyatt/Frith compositions that I really like and an awesome version of Charlie Haden's 'Song for Che'.

I can't get into any of his solo shit besides end of an ear, but the first three Soft Machine records are fucking amazing. Matching Mole has its moments, also, but nothing compared to the Soft Machine.
