I see what you mean...
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I find, what most people would term, 'non-guitarists' more interesting than 'guitarists'.

Savage Clone 04.12.2006 11:59 AM

I am not speaking this way because of gender; I speak this way because I see both of these musicians as "guitar as sound source" players rather than "guitarists."

I have seen Christina do one set that was very good.

hat and beard 04.12.2006 01:27 PM

jimi hendrix was my first guitar hero and is still #1
some others...
john fahey
sonny sharrock
dude from the sun city girls whose name i always confuse with his brothers, but whose last name is most certainly bishop
rudolph grey (blue humans)
kawabata makoto (acid mothers temple)
tony iommi (black saabbbbath)
thurston mooore
blind willie johnson
elizabeth cotton
d boon (minutemen)

are steve vai, yngweieieieiei malmmomomstine, eric johnson etc actually real musicians? i mean does anybody really listen to their music. i always assumed they were just inventions of the guitar industry to help sell overpriced "signature series" crap. kind of like everyone's favorite homeshopping network star, esteban, only slightly more ridiculous.

Savage Clone 04.12.2006 01:33 PM

Sir Richard Bishop.
He is incredible.
Malmsteen and Vai are what I like to call "guitar teacher/guitar magazine" musicians.
No one else cares.

elisa is no better guitarist than jewel or sheryl crow. just different genres

vai and malmsteen are boring and just in it for the glory, for them it's like a race or a competition, not about music. i read an interview with vai once that said something like if you want to play simple music with meaning and taste then you are a half assed comformist who doesn't deserve to be called a guitar player.

there are more tasteful shredders-like guitarists

Savage Clone 04.12.2006 02:34 PM

Just because Elisa uses a guitar doesn't make her a "guitarist," and I mean that as no slam on her music. It is a sound source at that point; the fact that the object is technically a guitar is immaterial.
That's all I was trying to say; I really didn't mean to come off as a jerk, and apologies if I did.

Nice Mizutani avatar!

I would put him on my list of faves too.

Malmsteen, Yngwie is a beyond talented guitarist. If you appreciate music on a strictly technical level, you must appreciate him. The music is still shit, but I enjoy it on that level, and that level alone.

Props to whoever mentioned chappy from Les Rallizes Denudes. Who are excellent. It's all effects over talent, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Savage Clone 04.12.2006 08:03 PM

Yngwie midi files for the ultimate experience:

Les Rallizes Denudes have talent. The word "talent" really has nothing to do (in my mind at least) with "technical proficiency," which is what you are talking about. Rallizes make killer music and they pushed the envelope far and wide and are as influentail as the Velvet Underground when it comes to Japanese psych, so to say they have "no talent" is inaccurate. They are talented because they make good music. I would also argue that they have less technical ability than average, but that's nitpicking since we are obviously both big fans.

Yngwie drives me nuts.
