How does Pavement tour effect Sonic Youth?

Now with Mark Ibold in the fold who gets him?

According to the press release it will be the 1999 Pavement lineup, Mark Included.

The Pavement announcemnt says that this will be a world tour and thats that. No new material no talk of a 2nd tour, just a jaunt around the world and done.

Will SY go back to a four piece for 2010?

Would Jim come back? Would another step into the role?

Question Mark.

jennthebenn 09.17.2009 12:49 PM

Mike Watt.

Mark Ibold 09.17.2009 01:22 PM

Mike Watt! :)

scott v 09.17.2009 01:29 PM

I would agree that Mike Watt would be the most obvious choice.

I'm still not quite convinced of this Pavement reunion though...

Rob Instigator 09.17.2009 01:33 PM

Where's Gary?

Sonic Youth 37 09.17.2009 01:34 PM

Mike Watt is too energetic for Sonic Youth. SY and Dino Jr should just bite the bullet already and merge to form a supergroup.

narlus 09.17.2009 02:22 PM

Kira.

Byron Orpheus 09.17.2009 02:25 PM

I'm guessing that this Pavement "world tour" is only going to take up a month or two.

I doubt that will cut into the SY schedule too much. (Or The Jicks schedule or the Spiral Stairs sched, etc., etc.) They won't have a new album out next year anyway, so I doubt they'll be touring *that* much.

andrei 09.17.2009 03:11 PM

haha... i never imagined Watt in SY.
In a kinda way it would be great. Maybe they'll add some vintage 80s SY to the setlist :D

automatic bzooty 09.17.2009 03:19 PM

omfg. if they had watt, would they play in the kingdom #19?

Rob Instigator 09.17.2009 03:34 PM

if they had watt would they play BURNIN UP?

SYRFox 09.17.2009 03:37 PM

Rob, your avatar is fucking legendary

dionysusundone 09.17.2009 04:03 PM

If Pavement doesn't tour during the Summer it doesn't matter.

pbradley 09.17.2009 04:22 PM

Sonic Youth playing with Mike Watt would be too awesome.

If Watt can't do it, then my top choices would be:

The guy from Soul Coughing (Sebastian Steinberg, I think?)
Chris Squire
Dave Ellefson
Sir Paul McCartney

SuperCreep 11.07.2009 03:33 PM

chris squire would be boss.

Whoever played bass on "You Can Call Me Al"

silverfreepress (sdasher) 11.10.2009 04:50 PM

Jaco Pastorius died in 1987 but a Ghost Bassist might be something to see.

Jaco and Joni

jennthebenn 11.10.2009 05:15 PM

Hey, Mingus is dead as fuck too, and someone offered him up.

jennthebenn 11.10.2009 05:19 PM

Also, ghost bassists who collab'ed with Joni=win.

I think Matt Heyner would be more likely than Watt - Watt would cost too much. And I agree with your Pave conviction - there is a lot of time between now and next year for SM to have another pissy fit. Personally I think this is driven by the wives who married into the pavement legend and then found there isn't any rock star money there, and they want some.

sergisonic 11.11.2009 12:34 PM

mmm, no problems:

pavement opening for sonic youth

Flip that around and you've got yourself an idea.

All Hail WATT 11.13.2009 03:00 PM

WATT couldn't work out.
and not for costing too much money as someone suggested? That, I am sure would not be the problem.
The problem with WATT coming in, is that he is in at least 4 other bands right now, one of which is the Stooges, who are gonna tour next year. His schedule is way too busy to hop on board, but if it was for only a month or 2 who knows.
Hell let's dream of a Stooges/SY tour in 2010! Then we can put WATT up thar!

Massenvernichtungswaffen 11.14.2009 11:09 AM

Paul McCartney?? LOL. He would so not be into that. :D

Watt would be awesome. They could play the White(y) Album stuff.
other bassists that would fit well would be
ME
ME
ME
My Doppelgänger/ME

I am excited for Pavement doing shows. I should try and catch them somewhere.

PAULYBEE2656 11.14.2009 01:01 PM

gary young will sub for mark.....

sonic sphere 04.03.2010 08:07 AM

perhaps pavement will be a four piece? or they could invite gary young back to play bass!
