Record Collectors: Whats the rarest record on record?

Usually record collectors have a list mental or physical that they keep with them so when they go to a new city they can scour the bins in search.

I remember one time at Wax n Facts in Atlanta I found about 15 7"'s that were marked down to next to nothing that were like candy. Pavement, Freek itten, Sonic Y, all each 3 bucks.

I've had dreams in the past where I would find original Hank Williams LP's in the used bin for a buck only to wake up listening to "ur cheetin heart"

I'm just Saturday curious what's everyone's guess on the rarest LP out there.

That boredoms record with eye singing karaoke that's limited to one copy.

the original cylinders edison used when testing out his phonograph

I don't remember... look up the boredoms discography site.

A lot of Acetates are super rare and go for large sums, being pretty fragile and playing only a few times, like that Velvet Underground one from '66 that was found at a yard sale a couple years ago that's worth thousands.
Edit: I seem to recall something about the VU music being released?

the song atsonicpark is talking about, eye doing karaoke, is born to be wild.

that one is very rare, along with the boredoms album he pressed onto a new york dolls album he traded to masonna.

I have a KK Rampage 7" limited to 300 copies, a limited edition Animal Collective 7" limited to 300 copies, a 7" Danielson record that is limited edition(Again, I want to say 300 copies or something), and a Ghost Arcade 7" that is limited to 50.

I would also have to go with the Boredoms record.

The Ninth Sympothy fourth movement is amazing.
William Tell Overture

Walter Carlos is a master

I think the rarest record is probably Schizophrenicroom/HaydenAsche split 28" "Crips Niggas/Blood Niggas" limited to a mere 0 copies.

its a kinda impossible question to answer, as there'll be countless obscure records limited to tiny releases, altho the majority wil be worth nothing. in terms of value, the most expensive ive heard of is the velvet underground acetate, altho i think there was also a ridiculously valuable bob dylan acetate found (blonde on blonde?). however. its the velvets record thatll go down in the record buying hall of fame, cos it was sold to the guy for like 2 bucks or some shit.

The Merzedes has got to be pretty valuable if only for the fact that it's housed in a used Merc. Don't suppose it counts as a record though.

i remember seeing a cd by guided by voices (i think) on ebay going for $6,500+ If i remember correctly it was part of a limited edition of 200 and had a hand drawn cover by one of the band members

Savage Clone 06.04.2006 09:13 AM

That GBV one was the original Propeller LP.

http://www.popsike.com is a great site to explore who has paid what ridiculous amount for which albums. Some surprises there, like the $8500.00 Misfits 45.

I have several albums limited to less than 100, and some lathe cuts in editions below 50 copies. For the kind of stuff I buy, 1000 copies is a pretty huge run in any case.
There is one super-rarity that I think someone could still theoretically run across at a garage sale; always be sure to look carefully at every copy of Bowie's "Diamond Dogs." If the David dog has genitals, it is worth thousands of dollars. That version was immediately recalled and the naughty bits were airbrushed out.
