Pan(a)sonic
 

They are an experimental electronic music group who started as Panasonic (not only copying the name but the typeface too), but later due to legal reasons changed their name to Pan Sonic.

I've only heard three of their albums and what they all have in common is a minimalistic soundscape, kind of like the sound of tinnitus with pulsating, glitchy beats. All I've heard is generally rather quiet and monotonous stuff, but for example the ending of the album ”Aaltopiiri” sounds like a thousand circular saws or power drills scratching metal. It's ear shattering.

The one thing I'd eagerly want to hear is their magnum opus, allegedly, called ”Kesto (234.48:4)”, which is a release containing four CDs and is over 234 minutes long. Currently I can't afford it.

I started digging them this spring, so I'm just curious if there's anyone else who has heard them.

Yep,i know them.I'll upload a track they did with Alan Vega a few years ago when i get more time.

I've seen them twice, once supporting Swans at their last-ever show and once supporting Kim Gordon and Co. The first time seemed like just horrible harsh noise and they did my head in, the second time it was tons more palatable.

I remember their installation at the legendary 'Sonic Boom' exhibition on the South Bank.That was a stroke of genius.

btw did you see Pan Sonic play on the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall with FM Einheit in 1999 or 2000? [I forget when exactly]

I read that "the duo performed a gig in London's East End from an armoured car using a 5000 watt sound system similar to the type used by the police to disorient rioters."

No but i have heard of that gig though.And do you remember when Labradford played on the same roof?Was it not a whole series of gigs that they had on it?

Some guy once showed me a song called "Panasonic Youth". It was a really shitty song though.

Yeah it was a mini Meltdown organised by Mute's Daniel Miller... I saw the whole thing and there were some great bands playing including Faust and Kriedler.


Wasn't around for that one... which is a shame.
