Out of curiosity

Does anyone know of the existence of a band that is made up completely of vocal instruments?
What i mean is,do you know a band where every instrument is made up of breathing and vocal sounds?

truncated 05.27.2006 08:31 AM

Not sure exactly what you mean...but probably not.

porkmarras 05.27.2006 08:57 AM

Right,what i'm asking is:
Do you know of a band where, say,Johnny plays vocal guitar,Simon plays vocal drums etc etc?I saw something similar on an old Italian movie as a kid and even though they where shite i quite liked the idea.Got it?

Onani Nic 05.27.2006 09:04 AM

Toilet & Bowels 05.27.2006 09:22 AM

there are quite a few groups doing vocal drones at the moment, but i can't think of any "bands" that operate w/vocals only and no instruments.mike patton has done stuff with rahzel, maybe that counts.
i presume you aren't looking for things like tibetan gyuuto monks or whatever?

Iain 05.27.2006 09:24 AM

Do you mean people doing voices that sound like instruments. A bit like that Honda advert only guitars and not cars?

john cage did some compositions for choirs, don't ask me what they're called though. because i couldn't tell you. because i don't know what they're called.
i heard one performed once though and it was really amazing, the choir were all saying the different phoenetic sounds that comprised the name of the conductor or something and they gradually shifted through all these different sounds.

LifeDistortion 05.27.2006 01:26 PM

Bjork's last album did that. "Medulla", she uses just her voice, I think the album got mixed reviews overall from what I recall. I like Bjork, but I haven't heard this album so I can't give you my opinon on it.

^Good call (Phish a cappella)

Phlegmscope 05.27.2006 02:35 PM

There's that a cappella sideproject of amt, called zubizuva X I think. I saw them last year, it was kawabata makoto, tsuyama atsushi and yoshida tatsuya repeating their name in multiple rhytms over and over again.

Some interesting stuff is on this wonderful radio station:

noisemachine 05.27.2006 02:58 PM

Mike Patton did a couple experimental all-vocal albums. Haven't heard them, though.

Well I stopped in at the Body Shop
Said to the guy:
I want stereo FM installed in my teeth
And take this mole off my back
and please put it on my cheek.
And uh...while I'm here, why don't you give me
some of those high-heeled feet?
And he said: Listen there's no guarantee
Nature's got rules and Nature's got laws
but listen look out for the monkey's paw
And I said: Whaaat? He said:

The gift of life it's a twist of fate
It's a roll of the die
It's a free lunch A free ride
But Nature's got rules and Nature's got laws
And if you cross her look out!
It's the monkey's paw
It's sayin: Haw haw!
It's saying Gimme five!
It's sayin: Bye bye!

I know a man he lost his head
He said: The way I feel I'd be better off dead.
He said: I got everything I ever wanted
Now I can't give it up
It's a trap, just my luck!

The gift of life it's a leap of faith
It's a roll of the die
It's a free lunch A free ride
The gift of life it's a shot in the dark
It's the call of the wild
It's the big wheel The big ride
But Nature's got rules and Nature's got laws
And if you cross her look out!
It's the monkey's paw
You better Stop!
Look around!
Listen!

You- could- be- an- oca- rina- salesman-
going- from- door- to- door.
Or- would- you- like- to- swing- on- a- star-
and- carry- moon- beams- home?
Or- next- time- around- you- could- be-
a- small- bug-
Or- would- you- like- to- be- a- fish?

Cool!Atari, did you read my post that mentions Laurie's music for a play at the National Theatre in London?I just wanted to know if you knew about it.I had the chance to go to watch it 'cause i work there and we get free tickets, but i've missed it.Not good.

Gulasch Noir 06.10.2006 10:52 AM

an austrian hip hop/pop band, Bauchklang, doesn't use any instruments aside from the human voice. But, like i said, it's pop and not in the league of Mike Patton or Kawabata, that are mentioned here.

There is a Stockhausen composition. I remember not its name, and I don't have a copy. I know a chap who does. Entirely with phonemes. I'm not clear as to what you want, but something like that? You've heard Alvin Lucier's "I am sitting in a room"?

What's going on? Why did I drink so much this afternoon...?
