it's an interesting take, sort of an extension of their sound on embryonic translated to DSoTM. it's worth hearing once or twice, but i wouldn't buy it.

gmku 04.16.2010 06:47 PM

OK. To tell the truth, I don't see a lot on the promotion list I really want that badly. I might be interested in some of the singles, like the new Stones outtakes from Exile thing. But even so, it's like, meh.

It's really hard to get me to pull the trigger on music anymore. I'm not nearly as impulsive these days.

I save my impulsiveness for clothes buying, it seems.

gmku 04.16.2010 09:23 PM

My dilemma now is I'm not sure I wanna spend anything on record store day.

gmku 04.17.2010 01:07 PM

Report:

Picked up two singles, the new Stones outtake from Exile, and the 1978 Live Elvis Costello performance. The Stones thing is a little weak, but I love the Costello stuff.

Bunch of free stuff including a Johnny Cash poster.

Heading out soon to see free show by Drive By Truckers. Need another beer first.

stu666 04.17.2010 01:27 PM

i got a free cash badge but the stones single had sold out

SuperCreep 04.17.2010 01:38 PM

radarmaker 04.17.2010 01:40 PM

I coulda got the Blur single but passed on it. It's going for £150 on eBay already. Oh well.

stu666 04.17.2010 01:43 PM

yeah you can definitly make money off of RSD but that's not what it's about for me, i had a good day anyway.

So I saw the free short show by the Drive By's at Harvest Records in West Asheville.

Review: Overall, pretty cool. They coulda served beer though. Instead people were standing around with their beer bottles and cans from the local conv store in paper bags. So tacky. Come on, Asheville natives, show some class.

More specifically, they did some nice sounding songs. I almost went in and bought one of their albums afterwards. Then it occured to me maybe I'd spent too much time in the sun. After all, I never really liked Skynrd. And they don't sound enough like Gram. So what the hell was I thinking. I guess I could get into them in a sort of lazy summertime beer-swillin' mindless kind of way the way I could get into some reggae. But not enough to spend 20 bucks on their slabs of vinyl. Plus their albums don't get stellar reviews. So...

Any way, so I went downtown to see what was going on in the other record stores. They sucked. Same old shitty inventory.

Bottomline: GOOD TIMES at Harvest Records. Absolutely the best record store in Asheville, maybe in all this part of the country. Inventory is super. Staff is extremely friendly. Nice store. Nice promos. Their record store day promo vinyl was fantastic, even though most of it really wasn't my cup of tea.

I picked up my friend who was running on 2 hours sleep and hauled ass to Vinal edge in north Houston and gotthjre just after it opened (9:00AM) and the fuckers had no SONIC YOUTH and the lookk on my face must have told Chuck that I was not buying shit at his store but my friend bought the Hendrix release amd then we headed haul ass to cactus records over in Montrose by shepherd which was opening at 10:00 AM and there was a line going down the street so we get in line and they let the people in and we had to w2ait two hours tosee the merch and everyperson that went past I kept murmuring "what you got whaddayougot whatyougot." and peeking in their bags to see if thy had takenmy beloved sonic youth and then we got to the front of th line and I saw they still had the Hits are for squares and I was happy so I getup there nd I got all three! Confusion on white, evol on pink and hits r 4 sqauresss,
yeah.
went home and blasted CIS and felt at peace and yeahshhsss

gmku 04.18.2010 06:02 PM

Funny. There was BUNCHES of CIS lp and HAFS lp but the Asheville crowd almost literally was like turning up they noses at that shit, man... .

Stones single was popular (I gots me one!), as was the Neil Young single. They all into the Crave by Fuggers vibe here, dig. AMeriCUntcana and shit. They was like 50 Lps by Drove like FUkers in a Spezial part of the store and them Asheville muthafuckas eat them up like Kandy kane sticks pokin out a skinny meth-addicted mountain-girl rednick 'gina. yo.

gmku 04.18.2010 06:05 PM

Strategy for next year: Gonna be in line an HOUR early, man. No 2 way about id, dig?

gmku 04.18.2010 06:23 PM

Anywaze ROBB... my hardprinted numbers SUCK!

Stones "Plundered my Soul" 45rpm is number 2750.

Elvis Costello "Live at Hollywood High" 45rpm EP is number 4359.

Pathetic! I shouldna evena pikked them up.

matt g 04.18.2010 06:48 PM

I bought HAFS, the Pavement QTP RSD Edition, Flaming Lips DSOTM, and the josh homme stuff.
I've given a listen to DSOTM and I wasn't put off. It was an interesting take on something so embedded in my brain. I think it's most def a novelty record, but whatever.
We had 2 different shopping bags full of stickers, cd samplers (one urban music, the other alt-rawk) postcards, bottle openers, etc. Swagariffic. Kickass nachos were served up along with local bands all day. 'Twas the shit.

gmku 04.19.2010 06:09 AM

I got a bunch o swag too. Coolest is a Johnny Cash poster. A few sampler CDs I haven't listened to yet. Bunch of music zinss. A bumber sticker, a pin. Stuff. Other posters.

Rob Instigator 04.19.2010 08:37 AM
