Grunge!!!!!!!!!

ok, let's talk about music again!!!

grunge sucks, it sucks, it's garbage, it's bullshit. that's if by grunge you mean nirvana and mudhoney and skin yard and and all that... "gee bro!!! let's rip off the stooges!!!" "fuck yeah bro!!!" out of all those bands, the only real artists were soundgarden*.

i rather listen to candlebox, sponge, collective soul, live, et al. to be honest with you, in fact, if by "grunge" you mean alternative radio rock of the 90's then i love grunge. as far as disposable, catchy music with ok riffs go, these guys were great songwriters and that's perhaps nirvana's greatest legacy and the one that goes unnoticed the most (see '*' below for more on nirvana).

*i said soundgarden were the true artists out of that scene, nirvana, were craftsmen, they dedicated themselves to the song, sometimes succeeding, sometimes not. of course, hüsker dü, replacements, dino jr, squirrel bait, etc. had already done that without mainstreaming their shit.

furthermore, soundgarden were the only band in that scene that always pushed for the music, whether they tried new things or tried to be accomplished in their respective instruments.

and melvins don't count, just look how fast they decided to split town to be a real band!

I don't totally agree with you. Mudhoney didn't start off bullshit. They just became that way. "Superfuzz" was patchy but good, the S/T was (and I'm well aware that I'm the only person in the entire universe who thinks this) damn brilliant. After that they went up their own backsides, until the most recent album, which was hopefully the beginning of a new kickass era.

Nirvana wrote some nice pop songs.

You forgot to mention Black Flag in the ripped-off artists category. Everyone always mentions Husker Du and Pixies, but Black Flag seem to get overlooked, probably because their pop hooks were a bit more obscure.

gmku 01.29.2008 01:34 PM

I don't totally agree with you, either.

Nevermind blows me away, as does Bleach and In Utero, though to lesser degrees.

Superfuzz hits the spot sometimes.

Grunge gave birth to a lot of ugly music but there was good stuff, too. Sonic Youth's Dirty is a bit grunge-influenced.

Be careful about using such a broad stroke.

Phlegmscope 01.29.2008 01:34 PM

Wow, another thread about grunge!

gmku 01.29.2008 01:35 PM

Let's lock this one down. Is there an admin around?

There is no need to pull out the big guns here.

I don't mind Nirvana and Mudhoney but it's just bland to me. Soundgarden are awful.

Grunge. Yawn?

mudhoney is the best out of all the grunge bands and nirvana are okay at times.

Ha ha!

Grunge music does not exist.
Grunge style and art however does.

Everyneurotic 01.29.2008 02:24 PM

like i've said before, mudhoney's "brilliant" moments was a 7" and an ep plus some songs scattered around. yes, they were ripping off the stooges but then, they did what the stooges themselves did, which was taking raw garage/rock n' roll, turning the intensity up and write a damn good song in the process; after that, they became lazy and generic (with critics praising every fart coming out of mark arm's asshole).

and yes, but more than ripping off black flag, they pretty much enabled them to do that, not so much in sound but in attitude: long hair, guitar solos, stoner rock influences.

and i put it in broad fucking terms because i wanted to spark some MUSIC CONVERSATION here.

anyway, i'm going to put on truly, brb.

gmku 01.29.2008 02:25 PM

Quit putting it down, 'neurotic.

Long live grunge!!!

Everyneurotic 01.29.2008 02:30 PM

at this point, i'd like to raise another point.

since punk, there has been an intense focus on a geographical place for music to happen, why do you need a scene to appreciate a band? why the focus?

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 01.29.2008 02:33 PM

I don't think I ever followed a scene when looking for bands. Yay for me! Though ask me anything about new music and I have no idea. I'm behind the times.

uhler 01.29.2008 02:55 PM

i never followed a scene to hear new music, but i guess i was apart of a scene in the late 90's/early 00's. i think scenes are just fine to an extent. it's just a bunch of friends hanging out, having fun and listening to music and talking about music. of course, scene drama always sucks, but there's always the bad with the good.

i don't know shit about new music either.
