you're smart. PUBLIC CASTRATION IS A GOOD IDEA is way more brutal and heavy than all sunn, earth, wind, and fire albums combined.

Sword Heaven. Although everyone says they sound like early Swans. :)

Brett Robinson 03.17.2007 03:53 PM

Sword Heaven is too fast to sound like early SWANS... and not heavy enough. At least that's what I told them when I saw them in Easthamp last year...

Few Sword Heaven songs have ended up on my hard drive; I'm rather intrigued by that stuff. Can anyone recommend anything?

To add the list:

The Goslings (obviously)
Burmese
Crash Worship (maybe)
Godflesh
Electric Wizard

are we talking combined body weight of band members or amount of low-end distortion?

i just put out a tripple lp of drum heavy bands on my label deathbomb. 6 bands, each getting their own side to demolish. sword heaven included (they told me this is their favorite studio recordings they've done to date... although i bet their album on load later this year will top it)... anyway: http://deathbombarc.com/releases/dba044.htm

i also have a 7" and split 12" w/ lambsbread by them in my distro right now: http://deathbombarc.com/neonpress/distro.htm

although if you are just starting your sword heaven collection i'd say hold off on that 7" and split 12". i of course love the tripple 12", but for something i dont have an investment in, definitly get the 3" cdr on Apop. its a live recording, but is one of their very best: http://apoprecords.com/swordheaven.html

if you can find the OOP 3" on Chondritic Sound, then you'll own the very best.

and yes, goslings expand throughout the entire universe every time they play!

Savage Clone 03.17.2007 04:30 PM

Cop -era Swans for sure.
Skullflower, SunnO))) definitely.

k-krack 03.17.2007 04:37 PM

oh, hahaa, I get the Poison Idea thng... I never knew they were fat.

atari 2600 03.17.2007 04:39 PM

show me heavier than the riff Lennon plays during Happiness is a Warm Gun...the whole White Album for that matter...yeah, the whole thing.

express please to me what is heavier than the Kill Time moog...than the interplay of the guitars during the Kotton Krown bridge or The Spawl outro, than the moments to the Expressway outro, than the orgasmic release during the lead-in to The Diamond Sea outro...

demonstrate heavier than the Velvet Underground Sister Ray express...than the aural assualt of European Son...

Coltrane...the whole discography, sessions list, & concert chronology...please explain what music is heavier

explain to me heavier than the thunderous force of Rotten's words grabbing your mind via kicking your hindquarters and the Pistols music seizing your heart.

please elucidate on what is possibly heavier (in the most visceral sense of the word) than The Jesus Lizard live on stage? Even The Stooges in the day might lose that imaginary battle of the bands on any given night...the only thing heavier would be maybe early Sonic Youth or Hendrix during '68-'69. And yeah, I've seen Crash Worship. Nutty frenzy, but, I'm talking bands with real compositions.

enlighten me as to heavier than Robert Johnson singing and playing from way inside your soul...

Dead-Air 03.17.2007 04:56 PM

Having seen Acid Mother's Temple when they were doing heavy, I honestly can't think of anything close I've seen live with the possible excepiton of Painkiller (Zorn, Laswell, and the drummer from Nuclear Assault!)

AMT reminded me of Slayer playing Hawkwind covers. I couldn't believe a group of old men could sustain such incredible crunch.

fat is an understatement.. i saw them play in 91 in Trenton when they got out east.. and pre-internet I had only seen pics of them on their records and a shot now and then in MRR or flipside... i remember right before their set started they were at some back stage spot at the back of the club i was up towards the front in the middle of the crowd and i looked behind me and i saw people parting as Pig Champion was wading to the front through the crowd... wowowowwo unreal how large that guy was.. Jerry A and Slayer Hippie were no little guys thenselves but Pig Champion was in a league of his own.. they blazed through an awesome set at the end of which Pig Champion sort of collapsed on stage i rememer him grabbing a two gallon jug of water and just downing the thing on stage it looked totally tiny in his hand.. RIP that was Rock N Roll

atari 2600 03.17.2007 05:01 PM

pain killer is pretty heavy. the original silence are heavy.
I prefer to laud praise on artists that have compositions. You know, songs with names that you can tell apart. For some reason, such music is like anathema to most members of this board.

i like the swans slightly (i suppose). I like einsturzende neubauten a lot more, and they are heavy with mucho heaviousity but those bands do not have the true dynamic power to be on the same level as the true HEAVIES.

I know EN go from soft to quiet sometimes...this is not an EN witch-hunt. I like them, but lets' get real. All of you need to get real.

Look, I'll go back to the first thing I wrote.

Listen to the fucking White Album's first disc. Listen all the way up until Happiness is A Warm Gun. Listen for the guitar.

There you fucking go.

Yeah, Helter Skelter blows everyone's shit away too.
That was like thirty-eight years ago and they still kick anyone's butt.
Lookee here Goo, The Beatles changed the world.

Yer Blues is great, but not as great...and yeah, they had a great song on another album called I Want You (She's So Heavy) with a heavy breakdown...which is all besides the point, because all you need to know is in that aforementioned lick Lennon lays down. I rest my case on it alone.
