Funk

A post in the "Unpopular Musical Opinions" inspired me to start this.

All I've heard is Breakestra, and they kick mucho ass, so please recommend me some good funk music.

A few years back I listened to this album quite a bit:

Don't forget James Brown.

Betty Davis, once married to Miles Davis but she was too wild and sassy so they divorced. Self Titled and Nasty Girls are the only two i've heard and are pretty awesome.

Funkadelic, I thought I hated funk until I heard them.
There first 3 albums are essential: Funkadelic, Maggot Brain, Free Your mind....

James Brown's Funky Diva's- I heard this compilation once and cant remember any of the singers names. Anyway they are like female James Browns.

Sly and the Family Stone- theres a riot going on

funk funk

Parliament Funkadelic , or Parliament, or Funkadelic- I love them. I listen to Mothership Connection all the time.

Sly Stone - while he had some fantastic funk, some of his songs are a bit R&B for me, though a great soul vibe

The Bar Kays - their early albums were way out

Curtis Mayfield - Get the SUPERFLY sountrack, and get the Best Of collection. some great funk and soul on there. you can get superfly for supersaver prices at the record stores. Curtis Mayfield is one of my favorites

James Brown - for a great sampler listen to the dveelopment of funk on the "20 all time greatest hits" compilation. yuou can buy the CD for super saver prioces.

The Ohio Players

I barely know any funk artists, but there's the Coup which integrates funk and Rap. They're great.

i've seen george clinton twice in the past couple of years. it was spectacular. there is one of the few bands that can be played in ANY situation and everyone will be into it. i was at a show a local hardcore show a few nights ago and between bands they were playing fuckadelic and everybody was boogying to the extreme

Back at my Alma Mater, we had a really good funk show on the college radio station and I think it is still going. Yes, here you go:

8-10 PM Central Time on Fridays

Here is the link to the live stream:

Show Schedule:

A friend of mine used to have a funk show on this station that came on before the D-Funk show. I'll never forget going in to the station and drinking tequila with him while he played Beefheart's Mirror Man on the air....

I got that Funky 16 Corners CD I posted earlier from that guy...

noumenal 04.19.2006 11:48 AM

BTW, WRVU is a good station all around - a little better than standard college radio

trance feeeedback 04.19.2006 11:56 AM

"make my funk the p-funk, I wants to get funked up"

noumenal 04.19.2006 12:03 PM

I was going to recommend Hancock's Head Hunters, but I wasn't quite sure if it was 'funk'. Though it is 'funky'.

noumenal 04.19.2006 08:32 PM

Also, I almost forgot, whenever funky-ass records are being played, Buy by James Chance and The Contortions deserves a spin.

Mothership Connection is so fun to listen to...with or without pot.

"sit back, relax, while we do it to you in your ear drum"
"can you imagine doobie in your funk?"

dietzer123 04.19.2006 08:34 PM

the only joy i felt in marching or pep band was playing tear the roof off the sucker

Danny Himself 04.19.2006 08:38 PM
