Too Much Of / Too Little Of

Vote for all the bands/artists you see mentioned on this forum way too much, and give an alternative of names you don't see mentioned on here often but you think they should.

I'll be counting the votes, so no particular deadline. Maybe a month or thereabout.

atsonicpark 01.03.2009 08:19 AM

too much:
My Bloody Valentine (by a wiiiiiiiiiide margin)
Pavement
Deerhoof
Dinosaur Jr
Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins (any mention is too much)
The Cure
Battles
Radiohead
Animal Collective
Liars

too little of... I could think of thousands here but I'll just mention a few I really think would be worth talking about more on here:
Koennjihyakkei
Slowdive
Swirlies
TFUL # 282
Harry Partch
Tim Hecker
Aidan Baker
Flat Earth Society
Thinking Plague
X-Legged Sally
Lovesliescrushing
Ahvak
Magma
STARS OF THE LID
Art Bears
Servotron
Phantom Limbs
Doctor Nerve
Fred Frith
Autistic Daughters
The Ex
Klimperei
Heroine Sheiks
Scissor Girls
Henry Cow
Massacre
Kazuki Tomokawa
Yukon
Xenakis
Terry Riley
Thank You
Fishtank Ensemble
Eat Skull
The VSS
Volcano the BEar
Blast
June of 44
Gastr Del Sol (surprisingly)
Yaphet Kotto
Sweep the Leg Johnny
Caroliner
Secret Chiefs 3
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Cerberus Shoal
The Residents

I was gonna say: take the time to think about it, that's why I didn't set a deadline.

SYRFox 01.03.2009 08:21 AM

is this thread a reaction to the new mbv thread? :D

too little of: double leopards
too little of: rubin steiner

too much of: smashing pumpkins

_slavo_ 01.03.2009 08:22 AM

too much:
Polvo
Joy Division
Dinosaur Jr. (though fortunately, not that much anymore)
Pink Floyd (until Cantakerous' departure, now it's all quiet again)

not enough: Cocteau Twins, for example. Or Pan Sonic.

It is old news, really. Anyway, good alternatives you put there.

atsonicpark 01.03.2009 08:24 AM

Yeah, I love Polvo, but they do get mentioned too much.

Also, would love to talk about Double Leopards more!

Slavo, didn't know you liked Pan Sonic. I LOVE them.

I edited my first response...

i think it's fine to have threads about shit bands.
the endlessly repeated threads (use the fucking search button), ratings, top lists, shit lists, cock lists, etc. etc. is what turns me off.

RdTv 01.03.2009 10:08 AM

Too much:
MBV
Polvo
Pixies
Nirvana
Animal Collective
Deerhoof
Bowie
Lil Wayne

The biggest ''too much'' is really an assortment of ''underground'' music that is being hyped for the sake of being new and not neccesarily being all that good. And I don't just mean ''noise'', because that has its time and moments within my life, but just every new band that comes along that is name-dropped by thurston or by so and so. Some of them are actually good, others, well read above phrasing.

Now, too little? I dunno, I think the tenants of SYG cover most of the ground. Yes there, could be more discussion in the veins of the contemporary avante-garde movement, namely jazz and some classical artists. But, far as rock/experimental music goes there isn't much that hasn't been touched on. I'm not sayin that wiki copied our posts onto there page about said topics, but well, we get the point.

gualbert 01.03.2009 10:18 AM

A bit too much of MBV ( but I don't care ), and Bowie ( anything is too much ), and too little Nirvana and Pixies.

I'm impressed that you avoided mentioning either the Ramones or the Cramps.

fat worm of error
graveyards

circle
black metal that came out after 95 and doesnt sound like burzum (craft especially)
blank dogs
the howling hex
cloudland canyon
dog food
drunkdriver
the homosexuals

batreleaser 01.03.2009 02:01 PM

Savage Clone 01.03.2009 02:12 PM

Avarus are obscenely overrated.

I'm in absolutely no position to complain given how much of a cunt I was in one of the rounds, but part of my losing interest in the first bout of mix swaps was down to a lack of feedback. So yes, bashful agreement here.

demonrail666 01.03.2009 02:55 PM

The Ramones and The Cramps.

Glice 01.03.2009 04:18 PM

Too much Bob Dylan, not enough Beautiful South. High time for their re-appraisal, methinks.
