Adam taught me that even if your art was total crap, as long as you are prolific in it's creation, it can be the best that ever was.

we saw that, first appeared in the "irrelevant" thread of all places (hardly irrelevant, but anyway, maybe he would have found that funny).

what the hell happened though? do you know? i know he had health problems, he talked about them here, but was this a sudden thing? i don't know what use is to ask these questions, but i have them...

terrible news really-- great guy, some of us practically saw him grow up here…. i remember the fullerene board, he was like 17, and had very strong opinions about music, and he really knew what he was talking about.

fuckit man. what a loss. i hope you're okay, considering.

noisereductions 02.05.2014 08:34 PM

RIP Adam. :(

Derek 02.05.2014 08:48 PM

Ah, I hadn't seen that other link you posted so thank you.

No one knows what happened to him. Last time we spoke he told me he had a morphine problem though I don't know how relevant that is. He also had nowhere to live and was couch surfing for the time being.

We spoke nearly everyday for hours on end. It was only in the past year or so our correspondence got patchy. He'd say things like he was in a coma or got arrested for driving while pilled out and whatnot but I never took any of it seriously because Adam joked about stuff like that a lot and had a pretty dark sense of humour. He was one of the most interesting and funny people ever. He grew to hate this place but I still think deep down he knows how much this place meant to him throughout his later years.

He'd tell me all the time that I was his best friend and it really meant a lot to me cause I never figured myself as someone cool enough to be singled out from all the people on here. I have years of chatlogs I need to have a good look through before I can say goodbye properly. I'm finding it insanely hard to process any of this because he always would come back eventually and now I'm never going to speak to him again and we'll never get to talk about movies or music or comics ever again. Fuck.

noisereductions 02.05.2014 08:51 PM

Derek, thank you for sharing. And I'm sorry for your loss.

MellySingsDoom 02.05.2014 08:57 PM

This is beyond awful - 27 years old. For fuck's sake. RIP Adam, and my thoughts go to his family at this point in time.

And I echo what noisereductions says about Derek too.

SONIC GAIL 02.05.2014 09:01 PM

I have ALWAYS thought you were cool Derek. yr a cutie

I wish I had been that close to Adam....Morphine is BAD SHIT!!!!! I know from experience. This kinda shit really hits home and forces me to take a hard look at myself in the mirror.

I am cleaner now than I have ever been....but I get it!!! It is not fun being an addict!!!! it fucking sucks!!!!! A few of us just get lucky and begin to find our way back, and it is times like this that remind us of what could have been our future.

Everyneurotic 02.05.2014 09:02 PM

I just found out about Adam. Holy shit, this is sad.

Hang in there, Derek. =(

Adam brought me a lot of joy and tons of music, he encouraged me without telling me directly to go forth with my music projects, my writing, my obsessing. He made me laugh a ton.

I had the honor to release a Robe. album on my label before retiring it, one of my favorite releases. We were supposed to do a Monosodic/Scissor Shock split that never panned out for tons of reasons.

This is really really sad, he wrote to me a couple of months on Last.FM.

So yeah...

For what it's worth, here's an interview I did with him long ago: http://oscillatorzine.blogspot.mx/20...sor-shock.html

PS: What a way to come out of SYG retirement, huh?

SONIC GAIL 02.05.2014 09:03 PM

I am willing to bet this night will top the last most users on the board at one time quota. He impacted all of us in some major way.

Derek 02.05.2014 09:04 PM

His obituary lists his grandfather as a survivor and that's so upsetting because his grandfather was terminally ill and Adam was the one who was looking after him. I can't imagine what his grandfather feels like that he's now outlived his young grandson.

One of my favourite anecdotes that he told me was that he used to chase his grandfather around the house with a Master P doll that said "UGHHH" when you pulled the string and his grandfather didn't like black people much so he was always shouting and swearing at him to get the Master P doll the fuck away from him. He had millions of little stories like that but that's the one that still makes me laugh.

pony 02.05.2014 09:06 PM

rip adam

hope you'll feel better soon, Derek.

Bytor Peltor 02.05.2014 09:08 PM

So sad:

Believe I will go play the mix CD he made for me years ago.

I'm glad you're cleaner than you've ever been. I wish I could have told Adam to get some REAL help for his problems. Not go out and buy morphine and benzos and whatever else from a dealer but actually get real help. He still had so much to offer the world and I'm so saddened he never pushed through in the end.

He told me he was working 60 hour weeks to try and bring himself back up and buy himself a house and everything. He planned to have a house and a wife by the time he was 32. He could have achieved it because he achieved anything he really set his mind to. He was that kind of person.

He had an unfinished film called Exploding Head. I hope one of his friends saves the footage cause I'd hate for his work to just disappear. He was working on a new Scissor Shock album too called Wearing the Horns. He sent me a few songs and it sounded great. He described the album as "Madlib and J Dilla cutting up Scissor Shock shit". I'm going to post the songs he sent me soon on the Scissor Shock facebook when I'm less upset.

I don't really know what to say. I hope everyone here who was friends with him or at least enjoyed his presence is okay.

MellySingsDoom 02.05.2014 09:19 PM

Derek- the main thing is that I hope you're coping as well as you can with this loss. This has really got to me, but I'm going to keep on remembering Adam as the creative, fun and happy person that he always came across as on here.

terriblecanyons 02.05.2014 09:20 PM

This sucks so much and I'm crying and I love you all. Please please take care of yourselves

I totally agree. I'm going to bookmark this thread for whenever I get sad about him:

dead_battery 02.05.2014 09:24 PM

in his CHILDHOOD the guy had already written novels and books of short stories and about 10 other genres of things that i can't remember off the top of my head.

how prolific this guy was in what he created, and also, how encyclopaedic he was in what he consumed, is just staggering. someone should write out the entire adam cooley discog.

we talked about this once and he told me he just thought other people were lazy. i wish i knew how to disagree with that.

his films were post post modern masterpieces. i encourage everyone to watch them. this is the kind of guy he was, he simply decided one day in his 20s to make a fucking movie. and he did. he made like 3 of them in fact.

the aesthetic this guy had wasn't self consciously diy or anything. he just DID stuff. he picked up a cheap camera and made a film on windows xp. this is the kind of attitude he had - he just did things. the camera he used cost like $25. he had those films screened in public. he took every opportunity there was, or made them happen himself, with his work. and the joy and passion he had for what he did shines through in everything.

i felt like he had life utterly sussed. he worked shifts in wall mart and saved his money carefully. he never had any idiotic dreams or narcissistic fantasies about his celebrity self. of course, its easy to think that about other people, but its not often other people really make you believe it.

none of what im saying is hype or over estimation or an attempt to glorify the guy. there wasnt anything magic about him, he just went out and created stuff.

what was also so unique was how adam didn't have a vindictive streak whatsoever. even when he talked about other peoples failings, there was no mean spiritedness. he was a man who knew his own mind.

i know all of this sounds like bullshit, and i am a bullshitter, but despite that, i dont think im exaggerating or saying any of this out of some tragic romanticism or anything. its all true.

rest in peace adam you were an absolute legend.

Such a great thread.

Ah, the memories.

Derek 02.05.2014 09:43 PM

nik, that post was so spot on. He couldn't even play an instrument when he started Scissor Shock. He just picked up a guitar and casio and made stuff. That was part of how his art was so unique. He did things his way and had such a great outsider perspective. Same with his films like you said, he didn't know how to make films but he just DID IT and his personality just consumes his work through it. He still had way more movies and music to make.

Here's the 2 scissor shock songs he sent me a few weeks back. I don't think anyone's heard them except me:

Tonight I will watch the DVD he sent me. The NO trilogy.

Thanks Derek!

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic in any way......just wanted to be clear about that for anyone who may read this later.

Taking care of ourselves for ourselves and for those who love us is the greatest / least selfish thing we can do!

For those who were close to him, I'm so sorry for your personal loss. For the rest of us who got to interact with him via SYG, I'm sorry for our loss.

IF someone knows what / how it happened and can bring themselves to share the details, it would be greatly appreciated!

this of course.

I think we were all blessed to have him around us when we did. I know he exposed me to all kinds of things - music, film, games, and just a way of thinking. He was so OK with liking what he liked. He had a way of being so excited by the things he was enjoying and that was a great thing to be around.

If you have soulseek then my username is black mage, I have the full discographies. I also have the RANGER RACCOON album he did when he was 15. It's fruityloops techno and he randomly just bursts in screaming halfway through every song. It's awesome.

If not, then type his name into archive.org and most of his stuff should come up. He was really into uploading his stuff to archive.org. He'd never take my suggestion to upload all his stuff to bandcamp but I may do that someday for him.

This. No one matched his excitement for art.

(And n'ik thanks for that)

SONIC GAIL 02.05.2014 10:23 PM

ok...this is now the fourth time I have tried to type this....I feel it is important to say though so here I go again damn it

#1 You will never convince an addict to change...it is something we must find on our own

#2 As an addict you find yrself with only 2 choices either succumb to the pain (KURDT) or pick yrself up and keep fuckin fighting

#3 I believe Adam was a fighter...but he died for the common good

#4 I also believe that Adam died as a martyr for those of us who will struggle daily with the disease. He will live forever as a reminder to me of the life I have taken for granted and how quick and unexpectedly it can be snatched away.

#5 Yall already know my stance on god....if ya don't look up some of my old posts....I ignored my beliefs for a very long time and my situation simply grew worse. The only thing in this world that was able to change my perspective was my belief in a higher power. I have witnessed too many coincidences in my life to just agree that we are not alone.

the world was constantly disappointing him because it couldnt keep up with him, and it burnt him out i think.

talking to this guy for any amount of time was a pleasure. he was never mean or vicious like i am. but he could keenly discern why so many of the other "artists" around him would end up accomplishing absolutely nothing. and he was right. he could see the forest for the fucking trees allright.

i felt like he had life utterly sussed. he worked shifts in wall mart and saved his money carefully. he never had any idiotic dreams or narcissistic fantasies about his celebrity self. of course, its easy to think that about other people, but its not often other people really make you believe it.

Yes his attitude about life was so admirable!!!! He accomplished so much in his short life.

Rob Instigator 02.05.2014 10:25 PM

This is fucked up. Melly just told me what happened. Adam had demons man, and he fought through shit. This sucks to hear. Don't know what to say right now.

Here's Adam's last imdb post, left 6 days ago.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/...8164#225268164

He discusses a fallacy in logic in regards to The Wire and The Sopranos. He changed his little picture to Quasimoto that day too. That's so fucking Adam.
