What was yr first job?

Curious - you guys have interesting lives, so there's probably some interesting first job stories here.

If all goes well, I'm about to get myself one collecting shopping carts[1] at the local shopping centres. Won't have to work very much (it's apparently a maximum of two shifts per week, although I'm slightly older than the age the guy's looking for), won't be too stressful (I hope), and I'll be getting paid enough for my wildest dreams (records and McDonald's).

[1]And it hurt me to translate that for you Yanks.

My first job was as a gate operator at a train station. If there were a lot of people working the gates I would slip off to the bathroom and play Tetris on my phone for like half an hour. I was only ever caught once. I would also always just let people through if they were distressed or had a good reason why they didn't have a ticket. I got told off a lot by management for that but what do I care, I was making barely over minimum wage.

Free public transport now!

That said, sounds like fun - or, at least, not soul-crushing.

Seeing how many people pass through a day on expensive £16 return tickets versus the quality of the service was actually infuriating :D Privatised railways are the biggest grift on the public and the government.. the UK government maintain the infrastructure of the railways under the name Network Rail to no cost to the private companies because several fatal train crashes across disorganised regional networks meant re-nationalising the infrastructure was the only way forward. Quite a nice bit of money that they make on the backs of the ripped off consumer and the sucker government.

Ripping up floorboards and manual labour work when I was 15 (earning LESS than half the minimum wage at the time - par for the course where I lived and at that age). I remember coughing up black dust at the end of the first day, and remember being the whipping boy for the older, much more confident guys I worked with.

There was no 2nd day for me. Never went back.

First job that lasted >1 day was in McDonalds. It was awful but there were some cool colleagues who I'd get stoned with.

Also worked for UPS while in High School. It wasn't too bad. It's hard to really not tip over walls of TV's to keep up with their demand....heh...
