"Profoundly deaf" musician

http://www.evelyn.co.uk/Resources/Es...ng%20Essay.pdf Musician writes about how she hears, and how she is fed up with stupid interviewers focusing solely on her deafness.

Interesting.

K so this is the first time I've mentioned this on here, but I'm profoundly deaf myself (this is no joke btw). I have to wear hearing aids, and without them I'm as deaf as a post.

In general my hearing has never really caused me day-to-day problems. The only things I struggle are telephones (put it this way I'd be useless in call centre job!), and places where there's a lot of background noise. Pubs can sometimes be a nightmare for me.

Her essay has answered a coupla things I always wondered about.
If I was to do music seriously and get even semi-big would my hearing be an issue for the journalists who might want to interview me? It seems it would. It's a shame that mine or her hearing would be/is more of talking point than her music.

people always want intrigue, scandal, etc. To a dumb mind, a "deaf" musician is an oxymoron. It is something that should not exist. Fuck em all.

Creative people have this problem in all fields. reporters will either create scandal, or harp on one thing over and over and over...
