Low-"C'mon"

Low will release their new record, C’mon, on April 12th, 2011 on Sub Pop Records. You can listen and download the lead track “Try to Sleep” here first.

The Pre-order for C'mon on CD and LP is available today as well, those who pre-order will get an advance stream of the entire record. Check out the album cover below.

C’mon was recorded in an old church in Duluth and mixed in Hollywood with producer Matt Beckley working alongside the band. Alan describes C’mon simply as “Warm, pretty, large like Nashville without the country. Mim and I are talking to each other in the lyrics, sometimes it's not pretty, but it's as honest as love.”

Highlights from the band’s upcoming 28-date world tour include an intimate show at St David’s Sanctuary at SXSW, the bands first headlining show at Barbican in London and a performance at Radio City Music Hall with Explosions in the Sky. See below for a full list of dates.

You're welcome, Bytor Peltor.

I sort of understand your disappointment, although from my perspective, i still would consider it good news if they were playing near my town. Having a slight chance of catching at least one of their shows would be totally blissful to me. Hopefully one day they'll finally make it here somehow.

Anyway, i really like "Try to Sleep" very much. The warmness of the song brings a smile to my face, and the sound, seemingly more organic than what they did on "Drums And Guns", makes me think "C'Mon" is gonna be a record with plenty of the elements i enjoy the most about Low. Excellent teaser.

I'm really looking forward to this album. However, i decided not to pre-order yet, just to stay away from the temptation of hearing the stream. This is something i wanna listen to on a decent stereo system rather than on my crappy computer's speakers.

_slavo_ 02.04.2011 02:56 PM

How are they as people? I heard Alan is quite a strange person

CHOUT 02.04.2011 07:22 PM

I heard somewhere Nels Cline makes an appearance on it...intriguing.

Alan Sparhawk himself mentioned Nels Cline's collaboration a while ago via Low's faceboob page. Below's the original post:

we're almost done.
By Low · Monday, October 11, 2010
we're almost done. after the RGC midwest tour, i flew out to L.A. for a couple days to work on more guitars and some vocals (sounds so glamorous when i have to type it out...). nels cline came in and played some guitar, too. i won't even begin to try to explain how awesome he is. now we are going thru rough mixes and the smallest decisions...

Uncut has already posted a (positive) review of "C'Mon". "Nothing But Heart" is the only song containing Nels Cline's participation, according to it:

dionysusundone 02.04.2011 08:48 PM

Someone on another message board who'd heard the record said it sounded like a cross between "trust" and "the great destroyer", which sounds like it should be pretty good. Looking forward to it.

hipster_bebop_junkie 02.05.2011 12:39 AM

Considering "C'mon" was recorded for the most part at the same studio than "Trust", i think it would be understandable if there are some similar vibes, even if both records do not share the same producer. I think Tchad Blake was credited as producer on "Trust", but i'm not sure at the moment. Sacred Heart Studios is an old church, so i would suppose that, since Low were already familiar with the acoustics, it's possible that they went there to record the new album with some specific intentions regarding the sound they were looking for. "Trust" is an astounding album, and if "C'Mon" somehow ends up being similar in terms of sound and atmosphere, i think i would be very satisfied. I'd love it even more if there is some kind of progression, though. An of course, something new would be even nicer.

I don't really know what to make of that comparison with "The Great Destroyer" as the implication of a resemblance between the two albums offers many possibilities, but taken into consideration the bits and pieces of comments that i've read so far about the new album, i expect at least one song ("Majesty/Magic") to be in the same vein as "When I Go Deaf", for instance. Maybe it'd be wise to assume the Nels Cline track will be equally similar, too.

I fail to see "Try To Sleep" as an hybrid of elements of "Trust" and "The Great Destroyer", but maybe the other songs differ a lot from this one. I've heard live versions of some new songs already, but sometimes they end up sounding different on the final recorded product.

The Uncut review i posted a link to, has a mention of "C'Mon" being heavily influenced by Neil Young, and it's the first thing that also mentions "C'Mon" as being more similar to "Things We Lost In The Fire" rather than to any other Low records, contrary to the percepction of your acquaintance, dionysusundone.

All of this just makes me speculate. Maybe i should give up, and just listen to the streaming at Sub Pop's website. Damn it.

dionysusundone 02.05.2011 02:56 AM

Yeah those are all valid points. I CAN kind of see "Try To Sleep" as being a bit of a cross between "Trust" and "TGD" in that it has a similar vibe to the Trust stuff but the production is a bit more lush and aggressive like The Great Destroyer, so maybe that's what they were referring to?

And regarding the part about being satisfied with the new one if it's anything like Trust in sound and atmosphere, I completely agree. I think Trust is actually my favorite of theirs so anything that harkens back to it is, to me, a good thing.

Guess we won't know til we hear it...

Here's a streaming of Low's session on KUMD 103.3 FM in Duluth, Minnesota, on April 14, 2011:
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kumd/arts.artsmain?action=viewArticle&sid=14&id=1788264 &pid=392

Set-list consisted of: "Try To Sleep", "Nightningale", "Witches", and "Especially Me", plus an interview with Alan and Mimi.

Longer and better than the WNYC session. Another great interview, interesting to hear Alan talking a bit about the reference to Al Green on "Witches", and most especially about Nels Cline...

Can someone please give advice on how to download the streaming audio? DownloadHelper didn't work to do the task.

On theduluthscene.org there are videos of this session, but the interview bits are not on them. They're pretty amazing, regardless:

Beautiful photos, narlus (as always). Thanks for posting.

Low are now touring in Europe. Before leaving the US (?), they stopped by A.V. Club's to perform a cover of Toto's "Africa" for their undercover series. Quite a killer version, in my opinion.

I hope some recordings of the european tour will surface. Kind of a disappointment that acidjack's tape of the Bowery Ballroom performance is the only one available in lossless format from the US tour. Good thing his recording is awesome, though. I guess it is possible that many tapers have also given up on this band (but maybe i'm just not having as much patience as i should), i'm glad _tunic_ is not one of those, and i would bet my eyes he'll hook us up with as many great tapes of Low as he possibly can.

Anyway, according to the info on Low's latest newsletter, a few more dates have been added to their schedule. Specifically, they'll be playing in Denmark, Poland, and Finland in October, and it seems that more dates will be announced shortly. Also, Low will make an appearance at France 3's "Ce Soir Ou Jamais" TV show, and their performance will be broadcast on May 26. Perhaps some of the french boardies (Torn Curtain and who else?) can record it and share it, or if that's not possible, at least i can recommend you guys to check it out if you have the chance.

The first tiny piece of aural bliss from Low's tour in Europe is a short session, including an interview, they did at the BBC for Marc Riley's show. It consisted of "Try To Sleep", "Nightingale", and "Something's Turning Over". The whole program can be streamed here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01174pd

If the world doesn't end today, US citizens will have a chance to listen to a Low live performance and interview with Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis that will be broadcast by a variety of radio stations across the country:
http://www.soundopinions.org/stationlist.html
Again, it's highly likely that an mp3 version of that session and interview will eventually end on the sound opinion's archive, but if someone is able to record the broadcast straight from the radio, please do so, and then torrent the hell out of it. Thanks.

As far as I'm concerned I won't be able to record it :(, but a video of the performance should at least be viewable in streaming on the programme's website :)

Just a reminder: Low will be on Ce Soir Ou Jamais tonight on France's public television Channel 3. Performance about midnight, according to an announcement by Low on facemook.

Yolafilmo, who filmed some of the footage still available at Primavera Sound Festival's website here, have announced that they'll be filming Low's performance at this year's festival. Doesn't seem like they'll webcast this one on San Miguel Primavera Sound Festival's dailymotion page, though; or at least it's not in the schedule yet. I'll try to catch PJ Harvey and Einstürzende Neubauten's performances, even if there is a chance that the webcast will take place at the same time as the UEFA Champions League final, right? If Low's show doesn't show up there, at least there is a chance that it will appear somewhere else (perhaps on yolafilmo's vimeo channel). Fingers crossed.
