Gordon separated from Moore in 2011, and Sonic Youth have drifted to a halt. "It's hard to say when the life of a band starts and stops… but playing music together is an act of trust. When that's broken, it's impossible to continue."
Wow.
It's nice to see an interview with her, but I wish they had focused on her new music a bit more.
---Edit---
I see it's in the fashion section now, so I guess that makes sense.

I'm really surprised at the dearth of comments resulting from this quote, but this is the most incriminating statement by any band member - by far - on the subject. Ouch. When there's big money involved (Coachella, Bonnaroo, ATP, etc) you can never say never, but Sonic Youth may have already played their last gig...

Well, it's a pretty decisive comment, but pretty much only serves to confirm the rumour that is already flying around the internet. So no huge revelation. :(

Screaming Skull 02.19.2013 03:50 PM

Some hope??

http://www.npr.org/2013/02/17/172096...a-light-moving

It's tempting to view Chelsea Light Moving as a low-stakes act of liberation following the indefinite hiatus of Sonic Youth after 30 years — and, by extension, Moore's separation from longtime wife and bandmate Kim Gordon, though the two continue to work together musically. But Thurston Moore has always been free to pursue musical whims like the ones he chases here, whether that means making graceful solo albums like 2011's Demolished Thoughts or unleashing last fall's bonkers collaboration with Gordon and Yoko Ono.

Do you think this is an informed comment or do you think the author of this write-up believes the YOKOKIMTHURSTON collaboration happened AFTER their seperation?

I think that the author believes that Yokokimthurston was recorded after the separation. The way that it's written doesn't sound very "informed" to me. :/

Aaaadrpk 02.20.2013 02:11 AM

EDIT
about this, just wanna write:
Whatever, It's wonderful see Kim, Thurston, Lee and Steve doing their b'sides etc;. It's really great. (special Kim to me.)
Now this "stress" around & about S.Y. end or no end, sucks.

pad_023 02.20.2013 08:16 AM

I don't know if any of you guys follow Kim on Twitter but she says some quite sad things sometimes.

On that subject I saw Thurston with his new girlfriend in Brighton the other day, she is some young poetess who works at Cafe Oto in London. She always seems to be dressed in black. Normally, Thurston seems to be watching bands when he is at gigs (or the ones I have seen him at) but at this one he was just sat in the corner making out with her, the eternal teenager.

jennthebenn 02.20.2013 12:48 PM

There's something to be said for, at some point in your life, growing the hell up. Oh well. Humans gonna human.

It's been in the back of my mind that SY are done, as far as being an entity that records new music and tours behind it. That statement by Kim was jarring, less for the content and more the fact she actually said it in an interview.

You can't deny that you would like to know a bit more about why they've finished.

Rob Instigator 02.20.2013 02:12 PM

It harshed my non-existent buzz that's for sure.

True but its not our business to know unless they make it known. However its becoming more plainly obvious now from these Thurston sightings and now this comment by Kim in that interview... it is now implying the obvious of the situation.

If only he was boning the worm lady, we could have at least hoped for major improvements in his attempts at poetry.

well, actually thurston told us everything even before the breakup: if you listen again (and carefully) to demolished thoughts it will appear evident. i realised this in november 2011... i wrote something on an italian forum at that time: i'd like to share, but i'd need a lot of time and effort for a good translation... if you want i can try...

I hate to even get into this discussion, since it is a private matter, but I feel the need to reply. What do the Thurston sightings imply? It's been a year and a half since he and Kim split.

As for Kim's comment, it implies cheating, but none of us know the whole story. I just don't see how anything in this situation can be obvious to us outsiders, based on what has been discussed in this thread.

not only that, take another look at The Eternal and for that matter Rather Ripped, some interesting lyrics to look at in hindsight

"Sleepin around, sleepin around
What will the neighbors say
Sleepin around all over town
What will the neighbors say

What you did was wrong
What did you good is gone
Nothing you do is right
Always ends up in a fight"

The most obvious example but what else?

I can't deny that this is probably subconsciously influencing my recent disinterest in Thurston's music, not even excited about Chelsea Light Moving. That and I'm getting into tons of other unrelated stuff.

It's more than subconscious for me. Does anyone know the lyrics to Groovy and Linda?

Not sure if that has any relation to their separation.

stu666 02.24.2013 11:28 AM

On one of the recent Thurston Moore/Michael Chapman shows Thurston said before playing Orchard Street, "This is a song about a street that I was hanging out with somebody who I was falling in love with".

Milky cement light, radiation boys
Breaking happy heart, blood and liquid noise
I see yr searchlight eyes, the stoney demon bliss

Wet and drunken desire, dripping tears
Grape stained escape, an immortal kiss
Free Jazz hotel, sweet now girl whispers

Crazy crazy crazy night sky orange
Promise and deceit, blindfolds and prayer
Orchard Street is anchored in divinity's shadow

Maybe I take that song too literally but I cannot help it.

As jennthebenn said in her ten worst Sonic Youth songs list:

"Post-K & T split this song makes me even more squeamish. It’s enough that their separation has tainted a good song like “Titanium Expose,” but turning this one from piss-poor to crappy is just beyond the pale."

I couldn't agree more.

again, did you really (really!) need him saying this explicitly on stage?

i almost finished my translation. it was a rather long (song-by-song) analysis: if you are interested i'll post it....

Toilet & Bowels 02.24.2013 05:34 PM

Man, Thurston Moore's lyrics are so corny.

Aaaadrpk 02.25.2013 03:44 AM

nothing against, it's interesting what all you think and heard and share etc. (at least for me, living too far of thurs/lee/kim/steve recently concerts, gigs, performances)
but this thread now could be called ''behind thurston moore mind: the subliminal messages" maybe i'll play psychic hearts in backwards! -->obvious it's a joke.

damnnnnnn....

I also thought maybe antenna could have something to do with this:

my darling cruises the streets for pleasure
skyscrapers in the dead love dawn
throbbing blood mind selfless creature
forever yours and then she's gone
radios play nothing when she's far away
tv antenna nothing gone to waste
radio transmitting nowhere it falls away,
she's far away

it all seems pretty obvious now...

Aaaadrpk 02.25.2013 04:18 AM

but now interacting with "what could means"

I always imagined Pink Steam lyrics to Kim.

Don't you know you need no other
I'm the man who loves you mother
Open up your arms to me girl
Let me feel your wild heart beat girl

Sweet lips flowers + cream
Deep in love surrender pink steam
Deep in love you need no other
Deep in love yr lonely lover

it's f* beautiful even more with my 'what I think illusion'

And, first Lee solo concert and he said something like: ''this is kind of a love song to ..couple dear friends mine... going through shit right now" ... the music is Angles. here's the video.

Keeping It Simple 02.25.2013 11:12 AM

I'm sure the few people that read the Guardian enjoyed the interview.

Genteel Death 02.25.2013 02:33 PM

Too many magical words for a kerb crawler.

badgercorn 02.26.2013 05:00 PM

Well in any case, Pink Steam and Sleeping Around were released 7 years ago, and so were probably written 8 years ago.

of course we don't know: maybe he had other women before "Mina Loy", but I think that she's something more recent: "in july she came to play, by january he learns to pray", so probably it started in july 2010 and in january 2011 he started to realize what was really happening... (you don't need much more time to realize that you are in love, and you need a bit more - october 2011 - to do what you have to...)

i finished my translation: it seems to me a litteral translation from italian, so i'm not sure that it is good...

i'll have to split it into two post because the system tells me that it is too long...

Skuj 03.22.2013 11:41 PM

Yeah, I dunno.....I might get crucified for this but, 4 years on from The Eternal (indeed!) I actually hope that Sonic Youth are now done. A new album anytime down the road isn't going to be right, somehow. 16 main albums (and many more sideroad ones) over the course of 3 decades (consistently 5 ish per decade), when none of those decades sucked in terms of output (I'm a diehard Oughties Defender), is a long road. They done good. We can now step back and quantify it all as Eternal fades into musical history.

zelocia 03.23.2013 08:49 AM

Personally, I don't like to think of The Eternal as their final statement. Although the chances are extremely slim, I am crossing my fingers that they will get back into the studio together someday. Some songs on The Eternal are great (Antenna, Malibu Gas Station, Walkin Blue and Massage The History). But overall as an album, for me, it's like they were trying too hard. I miss Jim.
