Mike Watt Guests on Kelly Clarkson Record

According to pitchforkmedia.com, Mike Watt plays bass on six songs on Kelly Clarkson's new record. Well that's... odd. Here's the article:

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/articl...larkson_Record

And here's some copy/pasted quotes from Mike Watt himself:

"The producer/engineer David Kahne is an old friend, and that's why I was asked aboard, though the guitarist and co-songwriter, Jimmy Messer, knew all about my history and was very enthusiastic; he's a great cat. Actually, it was pretty interesting. I didn't [know] what to expect, but [Kahne] had me trying all kinds of tripping stuff. Altogether, I played on six [songs]. They were already recorded, and I was replacing and adding in bass.

"Everyone there gave me much respect even with me being nervous, big time at first. I knew nothing of Kelly Clarkson before this but can tell you, in my opinion, that she can sing her ass off. Man, she's got pipes and goes for it. She also didn't have any airs or a big posse of sycophants and was just plain up-front people, which to me is very happening 'cause I ain't so used to all the fronting that can go [on] in some scenes.

"It was a challenge too 'cause it was much different than where I've been with music, but different is good, especially when what the people involved wanted was to hear someone working a bass like they meant it, and that's where I've always tried to come from.

"When [Clarkson] had to bail, she said to [Kahne], 'I think the old punk guy idea's a good one,' and we all laughed. It's just studio stuff, and I haven't been asked to be in any band for a gig or tour.

"I got lots going with the Stooges. Iggy called me just a little bit ago and said the album sounds great. Wow, I can't wait to hear it."

what? come on man!!

Danny Himself 11.20.2006 03:49 PM

I would go to see her live if he were playing.

This...is the best thing I've heard all day.

many good musicians play in BAD musicians' records.
maybe it's fun.
maybe it's interesting to try something "different".
J-Ax (an AWFUL italian ex-rapper) recorded an album with
Samantha Maloney on drums (Hole/Peaches), guitarists Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age), Josh Schwartz (Rath Miller) and bassist Brian ‘O Connor (Eagles of Death Metal), go figure.

Musicians are all whores. I honestly have no idea who Mike Watt is, although his name seems to pop up quite often. Did he play with some band I should be aware of at some point?

I thought Clarkson's first record was ok, if a little patchy in places.

Mike Watt bands:

Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Reactionaries, Banyan...etc.

Just to give you an idea.

Anytime a pop singer goes to a rock or rap artist to contribute to thier record its to come across "ediger". I'm sure for Mike Watt its just a another gig. Most of Clarkson's fans probobly don't even know Mike Watt from Mike Dirnt. So, his contribution isn't even going to matter to them.

the new kelly clarkson album has just become the most anticipated album of the year for me.

breakaway is filled with awesomeness, i expect more of it on the new one.

Ah right. I don't like any of them. Why doesn't Clarkson work with someone good?

Mr neurotic: I was dissapointed with the first record - I felt there was a bit much filler on there. And, seeing as you like decent pop, have you heard of Girls Aloud? They're doing brilliant things for pop in this country. I'd recommend downloading as much as possible.

He did it for the money...so what?
He deserves the work (and obviously needs it as well).

although...

can't say i have really heard them, maybe a song while changing channels and getting stuck on top of the pops, will look into them, though.

i don't like her first album, but the second has some gems in it: since u been gone, behind these hazel eyes, breakaway, because of you, walk away; all fine singles.

Less disturbing than Watt being in a Good Charlotte video. Hope he made some good cash.

Right.

And Mr. Glice, spare us the "I'm too cool to know who Mike Watt is" act.

EDIT: By the way, who is Kelly Clarkson?

atari 2600 11.21.2006 09:20 AM

It's funny that some people are writing that they will buy this. You'd be better off getting some Lone Justice for fluff than any Kelly Clarkson vomit.

Mike remarks that "she's got some pipes."
Please, she has a "passable" voice, but in no way is Kelly Clarkson some incredible singer. None of the American Idol white trash are really great singers.

The whole thing smacks of when Alanis got Flea to play on her cd. Welcome to the Machine, Mr. Watt.
