SYG circa 2006 / "the good ol days" / etc

Chris L's recent thread upstairs looking for non-YT'd Sonic Youth vids got me to thinking about some of the older days of SYG... like Tesla brought up the Usenet alt.music.sonicyouth for instance. And I remember around the time NYCG&F came out and the SY site went up but not much was there at the time. And at that time the Paintbox FTP was still up and that's how I got to hear so many bsides and bootlegs back then.

(then was thinking about those pre-SY.com sites... Saucerlike, SonicTooth, Shouting Poetic Truths, evol.org, etc......)

I'm kind of fuzzy about the first incarnation of the official SYG board though. I know I had a diff name back then. And I remember talking at least to Chris L on that board.

But if you go upstairs and go to the last page of threads and just start reading Sonic threads from when the new board started up it's so interesting. Like a time capsule. Was right around the release of Rather Ripped and the s/t reissue.

I don't know. Wanted to start a thread just to talk about some of the earlier days of SY on the interwebs, some of our earlier days as a community here, maybe dig up some cool/interesting threads from wayback.

I don't know. Maybe the announcement of that Chicago 85 show and the idea of the band rolling out archival releases has gotten me in the mood to look back on my own history of following them. Let's get nostalgic y'all.

I miss n'ik heaps. :'(

Fuck 2006. Time marches on.

noisereductions 09.21.2012 10:44 AM

2006 SYG would have loved this thread. 2012 SYG is an asshole.

floatingslowly 09.21.2012 10:52 AM

2009 was an asshole too. We never got new folks because someone was always mean to them!!

noisereductions 09.21.2012 11:03 AM

you mean Space? Nah. He's ok once u get to know him.

noisereductions 09.21.2012 11:17 AM

alright well for me, going back reading stuff about the SY reissue and Rather Ripped just got me really back in time. RR was released about a month before I got married. So I feel like that record just has this real special nostalgia about it that I'm not sure I ever put my finger on until just today.

In 2034, I'm really going to miss Diesel. :'(

noisereductions 09.21.2012 01:33 PM

well this thread is really eating shit isn't it?

At the Make Up gig last night myself, Trick and a couple other friends who
used to post here were reminiscing about the old board. Good times,
great when I was unemployed and suffering insomnia. Met Patrick via
the old forum as well. So there's a check in its column.

you should have posted this in the SY forum so I would have seen it! because yes, after all these years I'm still incapable of participating in the non-SY forums.

i guess this is the first SY site (earlier hits are just that Leaves-era placeholder image)

i have fond memories of alt.music.sonic-youth...not so much of those pre-SY.com sites who always lifted my content. ;)

but i was a brat..at least i got stuff done..

Really, Sonic Youth is the shit as a band for keeping this thing up, its like a socio-cultural experiment, preserving a live-stream, free-associative, reflective journal of the Sonic Youth experience of thousands of their fans. I mean serious, aside from like the Dead, what other band has been so interactive with their community of fans? This forum has linked us together for a decade, pure genius! Thanks again Sonic Youth, for keeping it real yo

Exactly, I was just doing the same nostalgia trips too recently :)

noisereductions 09.21.2012 04:05 PM

kind of awesome. I don't think I've realized that some of you I've been talking to for 10 f'ing years man. I'm gonna pour a drink and toast the board. Cheers. :)

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.21.2012 04:10 PM

many of us have met up at shows and record stores, many of know each other outside the forum, and at the least, all of us have been able to communicate with each other as a community through this forum to share our Sonic love :)
