oopsy daisy.

ok, i'll answer seriously. murray street, although this is going to raise some eyebrows, i don't really think it sounds much like sonic youth; in fact, i think it's one of their more experimental albums since they decided to base themselves on a cleaner sound and to rely on musicianship to deliver the "sonic" aspect that has been their trademark, that in itself is atypical and why i consider it to be a one off for the band, and one quite risky since it's a major label album and not an ep or a syr. it's a fantastic album.

nurse, on the other hand, is sonic youth through and through, although they used many of the sounds found on murray street to do it. it showcases some of their sharpest songwriting skills since dirty, coupled with meassured blasts of noise and their new found clean, musical fervor breaks. overall, their most focused in years.

and rather ripped, well, i think it was really rushed and the songs are not as developed, although the ideas were there and, had they recorded the album now instead of a year ago, now that the songs are road tested and more developed instrumentally, it would be a far better album than it is. it's not ultra horrible, it's just mediocre, a quick stop collection of songs from off the top of their heads.

so, i don't know, can't decide between murray and nurse, but rr is definitely third.

Rob Instigator 05.14.2007 12:37 PM

RR rules!

I say sonic nurse first, then Rather ripped, then Murray street.
murray street is a good album but it is dull and lifeless.

rather ripped is joy through and through, simple rock n roll a la sonic youth.

sonic nurse though, oh man, pattern recognition gets me amped so hard

Tokolosh 05.14.2007 12:56 PM

1.sn

Murray Street

screamingskull 05.14.2007 01:05 PM

"Now you live in the trees and salty seas
Trippin' out in the blue skies
You shut the door on everything
Too busy getting high
And me, just another dream theory
Lost inside your eyes"

I love this song!!!!!!

Washing Machine 05.14.2007 01:35 PM

Sonic Nurse is for me the best thing they have done this decade. Such a beautiful album through and through.

GrungeMonkey 05.14.2007 02:09 PM

Murray street. It was close though, I think Sonic Nurse is also brilliant. Rain On Tin just makes Murray Street that little bit better for me.

HairwayToSteven 05.14.2007 02:18 PM

Murray Street, definitely. Followed closely by Nurse.

Toxa 05.14.2007 02:22 PM

Rather Ripped though still good is the tamest of all three and lacks the dose of heaviness and fuzz guitar noise that exists on Sonic Nurse and Murray Street.

Sonic Nurse is well balanced with clean and distorted guitar tones and some old SY sounds mixed with the new though they don't really amp it up like on certain sections of Murray Street (Rain on Tin, Radical Adults...) which has some amazing guitar interplay that is not much unlike some of the best moments of Amon Duul II's Dance of the Lemmings and thats some killer shit.

so Murray Street is number one.

racehorse 05.14.2007 05:21 PM

nurse, murray st, rr

nature scene 05.14.2007 05:32 PM

murray st.
nurse
rather ripped

k-krack 05.14.2007 05:33 PM

Like I just said a bit ago... that was here, right? Nurse is so fucking good. I even will go so far as to say it's my favourite of the 2000's. One of my top five of all-time (SY) for sure.
Then MS, and third RR.

deathbyfeedback 05.14.2007 05:38 PM

easily murray street.

atari 2600 05.14.2007 06:02 PM

screamingskull 05.14.2007 06:03 PM

soapbars 05.14.2007 06:18 PM

i think nurse is great, almost faultless, but murray street has an amazing warmth and beauty to it,

a month ago i would have said nurse but murray street as time proves is better,

i dont really rate rr

youthoftomorrow 05.14.2007 07:52 PM

Same here

except their best record in 9 years.

Moshe 05.15.2007 02:56 AM

Murray Street 9.8

Sonic Nurse 7.0

Rather Ripped 4.5

pbradley 05.15.2007 03:16 AM

I kind of never got around to giving Sonic Nurse a decent sit-down listen. Rather Ripped is nice but I didn't find anything that made the album as a whole all that memorable. Maybe "Rats."

But Murray Street is a stand out. The coolness of The Empty Page, Karen Revisited is just poetically beautiful, Sympathy for the Strawberry brings the sexy Kim vocals that made Washing Machine so great.

_slavo_ 05.15.2007 06:09 AM

Murray Street.

no

fucking

doubt.

_slavo_ 05.15.2007 06:09 AM

I'm kind of with what Moshe said on the rankings.

against_the_grain 05.15.2007 08:02 AM

Too hard for me to list 1,2,3.....

but I will say, the trio is my favorite music of the 2000's so far. So I CAN make a list.

1. (MS, SN, RR)
2. ?
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?

It's after SY where this becomes tougher.

lizzarddd 05.15.2007 08:06 AM

that's too difficult... murray probably has my favorites then rr then sn

terminal pharmacy 05.15.2007 08:49 AM

ms at the moment, although i have been listening to rr quite a bit lately

mikec 05.15.2007 09:32 AM

1. sonic nurse

I'd like to take this opportunity to agree completely with Tokolosh.

Nurse blew me away with how good it was, and how enduring. Over a year later and I was still playing it constantly.
