I should add that I've been drinking quite a lot of Old Master Portugese Port (2003) of late. I'm sitting on 2 bottles of Inniskillin for Christmas, and there's a few choice whiskeys floating about waiting for a log fire to be lit.

You're a home-brewer, right? How's that panning out for you?

There was a real ale 'festival' at a very-well-known chain of British purveyors of fine alcohols and no music on recently. I didn't clear the whole bar on that ocassion but I was astonished to find an American beer that wasn't awful. I don't suppose British ales travel either - do you have any perspective on the generally-held opinion by British ale-drinkers that yanks can't do it for shit?

I love my homebrew but the last batch I made was about two years ago. I got kind of burned out on it. It's a lot of work to do it right.

But my homebrew, quite honestly, was some of the best beer I've ever tasted. I'd like to do it again some day when I have more time and energy.

The big mass-produced American beers ARE awful. Budweiser, Millers, et al. But there are a surprising number of excellent small brewers all over the country that make really tasty beer. Sierra Nevada is almost a big beermaker now but they still manage to make good craft beers. There are probably too many great ones to even start listing, but a lot of them are located in Colorado, California, and Oregon. My favorite companies include Rogue, Flying Dog, and Three Floyds.

I'm sorely tempted to take up home-brewing, but I'm also wanting for time. Shame really. There's loads of people in the area that make scrumpy, and there are some really good ones about. Unfortunately, cider slays me these days, so I've not partaken for a while. Maybe next year will be the year of returning to cider for me..

Yeah, don't do it unless you can devote some time to it. It's time-consuming, and takes a great deal of attention to detail. The biggest chore is sanitization of all the equipment. The stuff can get infected fairly easily. And it takes a bit of patience--takes at least 6-8 weeks from the time you brew it to the time it's ready to drink.
