there are several sorts of people on here. ive broken them all down into groups. of course, some individuals fall into more than one group.

1) youve got the "too cool for school" sorts. the types that say things like "this place would totally die if i left" < even though it did anything but. the sorts that are most prone to talk shit about syg, even though you can count on seeing em here basically everyday.

b) the people that come here to legitimately talk about music. of course everyone does on some level...but theres a few that come here strictly to discuss music related stuff. these are the individuals the rest of the board pays least attention to.

c) in HS they totally woulda been the jocks,,,the boys that come here mainly to see if satan has posted any cleavage + to make fun of anyone else that they feel isnt like them. they have strict ideas as to what it means to be a person, and anyone that doesnt fall into this idea isnt worthy of anything.

d)a couple girls that seem to have little interest in anything outside of appealing to the boys above. not a bad thing, everyone needs attention sometimes and ive certainly done things to (successfully) get it.

its kinda like HS, but clearly anyone/everyone that comes here has the same agenda 98 percent of the time (entertainment).

etc etc etc.

it used to be cooler. but, its always went through phases. i just feel as if its sort of in a rut at the moment. its clearly MUCH more sexual-driven than it used to be. but then again, its went through the sexual phases in the past as well.

theres more groups than that...but those are the main ones in my mind. the ones ive left out have short lists of members and really arent worth mentioning.

you're forgetting category e) - swa(y), the one who projects his own self concioussness onto a travesty of an analysis of the board and dreams of being asked out on a date by iggy pop were they go to a pilates class and then have an organic lunch.

but seriously...

i would like to become a mod and then close sonic gossip, sonic sharing, ban all the parody threads, sonic youth fans, stupid fucking indie smug lifestyle "so im just doing something inconsequential basking in the pointlessness of my subjectivity making a thread about it and im so self aware and ironic" threads, ban anybody that likes hunter s. thompson or anything i deem to be shit, be able to delete whatever posts i want to to drive out the people i don't like and then bask in the facist glory of my own impotent obsessions with shitty american entertainment and so called art thus further wasting my life and clogging up my brain/try to have interesting discussions with people where there is no ego "i have the cooler toys than you" approach and ideas are actually shared.

but this will never happen because as someone already said this place is used more as an "ego support" network for a small number of people who enjoy presenting a false avatar of themselves. but i think some are also probably genuinely trying to maintain friendships with each other so i can't knock it too much. most people who come here are searching for some way to be in the world, the secret they think must enable sy to do what they do, they lurk around and gradually post more and more until they are no longer in awe of the regular ones who must know something they don't because they have become them to the newer posters so they get sick of themselves. it is an unusually friendly board, we all complain but it is a lot more welcoming and civil than most.

this place is also the graveyard of a certain type of generation x attitude that is long past its sell by date and only brings misery to the sad fuckers who try to keep it up as their worldview because it is long obsolete and now just purely conservative. but you do get a certain connection here with what is new in the underground at a level of dedication and obscurity that is unusual for such a mainstream band. the likes of dj rick and nyoukis etc. who occasionaly post here, cooley's 100 strong best of the year lists. stuff like that makes it worthwhile but there is so little of it and so much of the same old bands we all know and don't get anything new out of anymore.

i want to leave but it just keeps sucking me back in with it's pointless and quick oppurtunity for attention. i wish i knew some other better board.

I struggle to contribute to this thread. It's easy enough to ignore the prickery (although it does sometimes get a bit too much).

I think part of the problem is that it serves different functions for some people. What I perceive as vapid self-indulgence, illiteracy and blind idiocy is just some kid being social, who probably considers me an overly-prolix, sanctimonious cunt. It's only really when those kids are a similar age to me, rather than the other side of 20 that it really grates.
