Record Store Day 2017 - April 22

The list. My picks:

Wipers Better Off Dead

Spoon "Hot Thoughts"/"Hot Thoughts (Dave Sitek Remix)"/"Love Letters"
Sun Ra Discipline 27-II
David Bowie Cracked Actor (Live Los Angeles 1974)

Apparently there's a new Flaming Lips concept-live album on the docket. Not sure if it will contain new songs or just live Oczy Mlody songs, but Wayne Coyne is calling it "a new album." So. Huh.

tw2113 03.22.2017 10:00 PM

Seemed like the soundtracks had the most appeal to me.

greenlight 03.23.2017 12:01 AM

link to a full list?

Severian 03.23.2017 07:55 AM

These are the ones that I'm most interested in:

THELONIOUS MONK - Les Liaisons Dangereuses, 1960
CZARFACE - First Weapon Drawn (A Narrated Adventure)
LUNA - Penthouse Deluxe
VARIOUS ARTISTS - Dr. Who and the Pescatons/Sound Effects
FOLLAKZOID FEAT. J. SPACEMAN - London Sessions

If the FLAMING LIPS thingy is real, I'm all about that too.
Also, WIPERS! SPOON!

My recommendation for you USA people:

Bettie Serveert -Damaged Good

this is from their newsletter of yesterday:

Quote:

Lodging North Carolina based indie retail store and label Schoolkids Records announced today that our album ‘Damaged Good’ will be released as part of the 10th Annual Record Store Day on April 22nd! This exclusive limited edition (1000 Copies) transparent magenta Vinyl LP (beautiful gate-fold packaging) will include a digital download and full CD. This version of the LP will only be available in North America. You can find more info here.

And if you promise to be nice and buy that album, then I can peacefully go see them play live tomorrow :)

The Soup Nazi 03.23.2017 03:09 PM

I love Bettie Serveert!

I'm pretty into the THELONIOUS Monk album -- unlreleased one from freakin' 1960!! That is pretty fucking cool. I almost never actually buy these RSD release, but I *WILL* be buying this one, because I'm certain it will see a wider release.

Severian 03.23.2017 08:34 PM

Also, this one's calling to me... for some reason... no idea why...

Are you being sarcastic or are you genuinely excited? I think it's cool, but if it's just Oczy Mlody songs with a Yoshimi...-style love audience overlay, that sounds like a massive waste of money.

noisereductions 03.23.2017 10:39 PM

I was being serious. He said it's a montage of actual live audiences played over studio demos. I am hoping for a pre Oczy setlist really. I like that album but it wouldn't make sense in this context in my opinion.

ilduclo 03.24.2017 10:20 AM

the G Fibbers one looks great, too.

Well, looks like we'll both be disappointed.
It's "seven Oczy Mlody tracks." Remixed, it sounds like.

Here, I didn't even see this until just now, but Pitchfork reported on in a couple days ago:

According to the description, it includes seven tracks from their 2017 LP Oczy Mlody “reimagined as a fictional/fantastical live Flaming Lips performance on the International Space Station.”

Severian 03.24.2017 11:08 AM

Record Store Day kinda sucks, tbh.

noisereductions 03.24.2017 11:55 AM

oh. That's way less exciting.

Spacemen 3 are Asking Fans Not to Buy Their Albums on Record Store Day
Jason Pierce and Pete Kember Issue Statement About Legal Dispute with Label

Jason Pierce (aka J. Spaceman) and Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) of iconic space-rock band Spacemen 3 have issued a statement via the Twitter page of Pierce's current band, Spiritualized, asking fans not to buy the vinyl reissues of their albums being reissued in the U.K. on Record Store Day this Saturday. Pierce and Kember are in a legal dispute with Gerald Palmer and the label Space Age Recordings, who are putting out three Spacemen 3 releases on Record Store Day.

The statement reads as such: "We would seriously like to ask fans not to buy the Spacemen 3 releases and any merchandise that are being offered for sale on Record Store Day or any other Spacemen 3 releases and merchandise offered by Gerald Palmer on Space Age Recordings or any other subsidiary of that label. We are currently in legal dispute with Gerald Palmer due to him depriving us of our rights in our music and other intellectual property rights relating to Spacemen 3. Any monies from those sales will go directly to him and help fund his side of the dispute. In short... PLEASE DON'T BUY OUR RECORDS FROM SPACE AGE RECORDINGS!"

tw2113 04.22.2017 03:16 PM

I let the "crowd" have first pickings and slept in. Did show up eventually and got a copy of Super Furry Animals.

ilduclo 04.22.2017 03:36 PM

got the Meridith Monk '71

I read about this. Kember's been making the rounds on message boards and stuff, telling the story of "professional Spacemen 3 rapist" Palmer.

He's not a very eloquent chap, Kember. At least not in his written messages, which could easily be the work of an eight-grader.

Still, I won't be doing my beloved Spacemen any damage by purchasing any of their RSD treats. Not that I'm going to be buying ANY RSD treats. Fuck RSD. I hate the mobs and all the stupid shit. I'll get the Prince EP when it comes out legally ( ;) ) and I'll get the Flaming Lips thing later on eBay or something. I forget what else I wanted. Oh! The Thelonious Monk thing! Yeah! But that's out already, so... fuck it.

Anyway, I do have a LOT of Spacemen 3 booty, and I wonder if all of it is legit. I have a couple re-issues that I believe are from Space Age (I'd have to check to be sure) so I'm kinda wondering if I haven't already participated in the unwitting rape-by-proxy of one of my best bands.

Severian 04.22.2017 05:49 PM

BTW: Spacemen 3 have to have one of the greatest band logos of all time, don't you think?

Jesus that's good fucking design.

Neat-o! I got the Nels Cline/Shirley Horn 7" (not a collaboration, obviously, since Horn is dead and Nels is far too classy to do some "Unforgettable" bullshit) and of course the 3-song Spoon Hot Thoughts 12". Bitchen...

ilduclo 04.23.2017 03:26 PM

Crowded as all possibly at my little local, had some great conversations while waiting for it to open, everyone was really cool and everyone appeared to have a great time. Good to see people respectfully crowding! Plus, GOT THE MERIDITH MONK 1971 REMASTER!!
