are sewing machines cheap

i've been sitting here for like 2 hours and i'm bleeding through like 20 places,i'm out of strings and this patch is crookeder than my face

Glice 12.21.2009 06:56 PM

Sewing machines: don't buy cheap. Like 60s Fenders, you can't go wrong with a Singer. But you'll be replacing it in 2 years if you get a bottom-of-the-range one.

Or you could learn to sew better.

Glice 12.21.2009 06:57 PM

Pro-tip - don't sew patches while you're wearing the garment concerned.

Glice 12.21.2009 06:58 PM

Or thimbles. They are as cheap as chips.

wellcharge 12.21.2009 07:02 PM

see i think i have a thimble, but it won't help the fact that it takes me two hours and the final product still isn't up to the pathetically low punk rock standard

ploesj 12.21.2009 07:02 PM

as usual, you have to pay for quality. if you rarely sew anything, just learn how to do it better.

Yeah... as ploesj says, practise is the key, I'm afraid. Gayly, sewing is one of the very few things I have an innate talent for.

when I read this thread's title, I immediately thought "this is the thread where glice waxes knitting".

you did not disappoint.

once, in HomeEc class, I sewed me up a hamburger pillow. true story.

Glice 12.21.2009 07:23 PM

Sewing's a very different discipline to knitting dollface. Related, certainly, but they're two behemoths of dexterity. With sewing, there's more room for being thoughtful with your stitch on the hop. Making the right choice of stitch is very important. With knitting, you should have a set plan before you even go near the needles, and deviating from that plan is out of the question. OUT OF THE QUESTION.

floatingslowly 12.21.2009 07:36 PM

I imagine you sewing up little booties for yr 50 cats, miss spinster.

Glice 12.21.2009 07:37 PM

That sounds like a happy life to me. Except I fucking hate cats.

floatingslowly 12.21.2009 07:46 PM

shit. I was hoping that my "sewing up little booties" comment would prompt more "knitting vs. sewing" nerd-rage, again*.

*we've walked this path before, cupcake.

floatingslowly 12.21.2009 07:46 PM

ps: I plan to dollface somebody, very soon.

ploesj 12.22.2009 05:11 AM

i want to learn how to knit. riht now i can crochet and sew pretty well. my mother and stepfather got me a sewing machine for my birthday a few years ago and now i make stuff like simple dresses and pyjama pants myself.

Get yourself a Singer. Preferably an industrial one.
It'll go a long way and even sew through 3-4mm leather, if needed.

floatingslowly 12.22.2009 09:23 AM

I'm having difficulty finding a use for dollface at work.

if I use it on a minion, I'm likely to get slapped. if I use it on the tech guy (that I typically 'chief'), I'll come out looking gay (like Rob and P Bradders).

HALP!

ps: I've tried twice (unsuccessfully) to rep glice. oh, the burning shame of it all!

verme (prevaricator) 12.22.2009 09:35 AM

dollface the tech guy, then redeem you from gayness by dollfacing one of the minions.

floatingslowly 12.22.2009 09:50 AM

too overt. the trick lies in only making them suspect that I'm making fun of them.

it has to come like a stealth fighter in the night.

verme (prevaricator) 12.22.2009 10:04 AM

i see.
fat(-ish) people is probably a good bet.
