is there a differnece between doom metal and black metal? i guess one might involve burning down churches?

one more thing, i recommend you check out the forefathers of the genre, sometimes known as first wave of black metal, the basics are:

venom - welcome to hell, black metal and at war with satan (those three are mandatory)

bathory - the first three (hammerheart was mentioned, but that's more symphonic, these are raw, necro produced, blastbeat outfitted, bleak sounding)

celtic frost - the first three (morbid tales, to mega therion, into the pandemonium)

if you research, you'll also find mentions of german thrash as seminal cornerstones of the bm sound, even though these are thrash metal with bleaker, more brutal sounds; these are kreator, sodom and destruction, the big three.

also seminal but more obscure are sarcofago and tormentor.

yes, doom is slower and heavier, stuff like cathedral, moss, sleep, nadja, earth, obsessed, generally speaking doom is an expansion on black sabbath's stuff.
generally speaking black metal is faster, not as sonically heavy, more frequently it has buzzy guitar sounds, lyrical themes tend to focus around satanism/paganism, war, nature, suffering. not much of an easily detecable sabbath sound, most black metal sounds more like punk than what people would typically associated with metal, vocals tend to be shrieked.

Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters
It's avant-garde black metal with clean guitars and crooning vocals.

My buddy and I have been listening to lots of Beherit and Haemoth non-stop lately. I've been pushing Xasthur on him too, but that's old hat for me.

Anyway, I absolutely love the production on these albums. Especially Haemoth's stuff - so raw and tinny, however Beherit is obviously the technically superior group between the two.
