HALP?

I need to get my usb turntable working, however the desk where the mac sits is completely cluttered with items. if I attempt to move them, a sanctioned exorcist will be required to bring peace.

will my shitty windows xp laptop be able to handle the job, or will it cause mid-track stuttering that makes me throw my ipod out the window at a later date?

I love my ipod. :(

maybe this is the wrong forum; maybe it isn't.

Depends on how old the XP is - the process shouldn't be overly resource-heavy, and the software shouldn't either. You might need to sacrifice recording quality a bit. It tends to not be a very dynamic signal, so it'll either skitter straight away or not at all. Also, if the turntable's got a USB out, that cuts down faff in the chain, making it less intensive on your PC.

My laptop tends to groan and wheeze at the idea of moving some files, but vinyl 'rips' (as you young people call them) tend to go without too much of a hitch.

Having said that, there's people on here much more music tech-aware than me. Listen to them.

Alternate answer: lrn2slsk, waxfag.

thanks much. I didn't think that it would be too resource heavy, but damn if those mid-track tics don't fuck me off.

ps: if I were still a waxfag, I sure as hell would have taken better care. it's all about 1's and 0's for me, these days.

Glice 02.12.2010 08:22 PM

Yeah, I should imagine you're smart enough to shut down non-essential background processes and not try and WoW at the same time. It'll be fine.

Incidentally, it's funny how internet vernacular verbs everything.

floatingslowly 02.12.2010 08:32 PM

I only "WoW" when I'm bored and currently, I'm not.

I'm a little concerned about a program called "ez vinyl/tape converter" though.

I was under the impression that it came with Audacity.

banzai

floatingslowly 02.12.2010 09:40 PM

it did come with Audacity, but warned me that it was for "advanced" users only.

I took this to be a slur on my age and went with EZ. so far, so good

now to spend days pretending that I'm still a waxtraxfag.

actually yeah, i wouldn't rip my wax, just slsk the files you're looking for or alternatively blogspot google'em fuckaz.

nicfit 02.13.2010 04:56 AM

Put a cd on the vinyl player (written side facing up), it will rip it more easily coz it's already digital.
OK?

floatingslowly 02.13.2010 10:37 AM

I don't believe that my iPod will play slsk.

beside, ez mode really is and it's been working nicely.

my biggest frustration now is being unable to mix out of the cunting long breaks.

the laptop should be able to handle the input as it as this is only 2 channels of audio and probably only usb1 which is low bandwidth, like 12Mbps.

if you get stutter, that's cuz maybe it's usb2 and the bottleneck is not the cpu but disk speed, as often laptops have 5400rpm (or slower) speeds (down to like 4200rpm for some large drives)

before you capture, make sure you have enough space (about 700MB per record if you're doing WAV capture, less if you're catching compressed files), and that your disk was, oh what is that thing you do with windows, DEFRAGMENT.

IF you get stutter in spite of this, only if you do, then just get yrself and external drive, preferrably on a completely different bus, like firewire. make sure its a 7200rpm drive.

that way your macheen will be able to function as a mere pipe between the usb and the external drive.

you can get one cheap off newegg or amazon or you can buy an enclosure and build your own, but i'm not sure that as a girlie man you're qualified to perform such tasks. if that's the case, you can always hire a butch lesbian to do the job. labor costs are high though so there's plenty of readymade. i'd send you to walmart but they often don't have drives with FW interface-- you could try ratshack but they are inferior and overpriced whereas walrats is inferior but aptly priced (cheeeeeep).

for mac i like the lacie quadra d2 1TB, they have fw400/800, usb, eSata, and can be daisychained (how girlie does that sound), but might be too much for what you need (big, pricey, awesome).

there are also external bus-powered hard drives for laptops (2.5", encased like a cig box) but you need to have 6-pin firewire not 4 or a FW800 (which i doubt your xp macheen has) to bus-power it (you can still transfer but not power w/ 4-pin). if not bus-powered you can always use the power supply they come with, but the point is, it can be a 7200rpm drive and small and portable, and when you flee home dodging missiles of boiling ectoplasm you can hide it in your cargo pants.

if nothing works do what nicfit sez. he's 100% right you know.
