Favorite Nick Cave involved Alblum...

Nick Cave is one of my musical heroes. The Birthday Party is easily in my top 10 favorite bands, possibly top 5 but thats so hard to narrow down. They were a punk rock band, and lets face it, when it boils down to it, Punk Rock is the music that usually defines most of us best. But anyways, they were punk, but they also added some noise and dark lyrics and imagery and man i just fucking love them. His stuff with the Bad Seeds is mostly great too, and I know theres been tons of great stuff coming out lately but the Grinderman alblum I think is my favorite this year. Not only is nick a visionary musician, his lyrics are so good they read almost like literature... The dudes a screenwriter too now for christsake!

With that said, Ill say:
Birthday Party-Prayers on Fire
Grinderman

Dead-Air 12.09.2007 12:22 AM

Prayers on Fire

then From Her to Eternity

Grinderman is up there though.

I saw Grinderman/Mr. Cave solo a few months ago and it was a fantastic time.

I can't faulter anything Nick Cave does. I need to get me some Birthday Party.

i used to like the birthday party more than the bad seeds, but now i prefer the bad seeds. i like his piano ballads a whole lot. the grinderman record is in my top 10 of the year.

I don't think you can pick one group over the other because both vary so much stylistically from record to record. I love Prayers on Fire, but I'd take any of the first five Bad Seeds records over Junkyard. But then before Grinderman I was not personally really into where he was heading with the Bad Seeds (though I know I'm a minority in this view around here and several people just love the last couple of their albums.)

NOT Grinderman.

For real.

I would see them if I had the chance (duh) but the album itself is nothing that would rank among my Nick Cave favorites.

u cant really compare the bad seeds to the birthday party tho. the birthday party represent much more of nick's punk rock (ramones, iggy, etc..), no wave, and noise/industrial influences, while the bad seeds resemble his more blues and old rock and roll influences. Either way, theyre both fucking amazing.

On a random side note, my favorite poster is an amazing birthday party-era Nick Cave Poster. Hes very young and junked out in it, yknow, when he had that crazy doo, and hes wearing an amazing tshirt that reads "I HATE EVERY COP IN THIS TOWN, A Good Cop is a Dead Cop!". Then theres an old hippy dude in a wheel chair watering a cop's grave with "roach food". Ive been seaching ebay like a madman for this tshirt ever since i bought the poster.

On the other hand there is plenty of both influences in the greatest records of both groups. From Her to Eternity could have been a Birthday Party album despite it's moving into new teritory at the same time. Your Funeral My Trial also has plenty of the old punk intensity all over "Hard On For Love".

Any of the Birthday Party stuff.

I'm not incredibly familiar with his whole catalog. The song The Mercy Seat is really awesome, but everything I've heard from him other than that song is completely different.

I feel weird for not thinking The Mercy Seat is his best song. Or that it's awesome, or something. It could have been the first Bad Seeds song I heard, maybe, I can't really remember. And I really liked it, but after hearing all the others, it doesn't stand out among the songs that I consider to be his best.

I can see what people like about it. I like it. It's a good song. But he has more interesting material.

dionysusundone 12.09.2007 09:34 PM

Ha, I have that poster as well...I love it.

Lately I've really been liking No More Shall We Part....but I hated it at first.
Favorite Birthday Party is Hee-Haw, because it was the first one that really grabbed me.
