Charlie Haden (Ornette Coleman, Liberation Music Orchestra) RIP

More musical bad news incoming, I'm afraid - double bassist, composer and political activist Charlie Haden has passed away at the age of 76, following a long illness: http://www.theguardian.com/music/201...den-dies-at-76

Haden is perhaps best known for his work with Ornette Coleman, and performed as part of Coleman's quartet on those classic Atlantic albums (including, of course, "Free Jazz"). He also played with John Coltrane (on "The Avant Garde" album, which also featured Don Cherry), Alice Coltrane, Yoko Ono, Archie Shepp, amongst many other (as well as Beck and Ringo Starr (no, I'm not making this up)). His longest-running concern though was his Liberation Music Orchestra (who recorded an album for Impulse! in 1973 - currently still in print on CD), whose most famous composition is "Song For Che", which Haden performed in Portugal in the early 70's, enraging the fascist Salazar regime there (and getting him into bother with the FBI to boot).

For now, though, I leave with this number, the title tune from "Change Of the Century". RIP Charlie - http://youtu.be/fpva1_of3L0

Here's Charlie Haden giving it some distorted wah-wah double bass business on a Keith Jarrett number, from Jarrett's 1971 album "Birth": http://youtu.be/xM4AJUW9nqU
